Vertical Gradients of Refractivity in the Mesosphere and Atmosphere Retrieved from GPS/MET and CHAMP Radio Occultation Data

چکیده
Fine structures in the vertical gradient of the electron density have been retrieved by means of analysis of the amplitude of radio occultation (RO) data in sporadic E-layers (heights interval 85-110 km). Maximum values of the positive gradients 45⋅10, 48⋅10, 25⋅10, 29⋅10 [mkm] are located at levels 92, 105 km (GPS/MET event 0393) and 93.5, 100 km (GPS/MET event 0583). Variations in the vertical gradient of refractivity in the atmosphere have been found for CHAMP RO event 09. Vertical gradient of refractivity changes in interval ±5 N-units/km (height interval 3-10 km) and ±0.5 Nunits/km between levels 11 and 18 km. Vertical distribution of temperature gradient between level 3-37 km reveals features at height 4-6, 9-10 km with positive values of about 6-9 K/km. Amplitude RO data analysis may be used for detailed retrieving vertical gradients of refractivity and temperature in the atmosphere and electron density in the lower ionosphere during CHAMP and future COSMIC RO missions.

Observation Operators for the Assimilation of Occultation Data into Atmospheric Models: A Review
During the past decade, researchers have been working to develop methods for the assimilation of Global Positioning System (GPS) radio occultation data into numerical weather prediction (NWP) models. Until recently, two strategies have received the most attention: 1) assimilation of the retrieved bending angle profiles, and 2) assimilation of the retrieved refractivity profiles. The assimilatio...
متن کاملGPS radio holography as a tool for remote sensing of the atmosphere, mesosphere, and terrestrial surface from space
GPS radio occultation (RO) signals are highly coherent and precise, and thus sufficient for holographic investigation of the atmosphere, ionosphere, and the Earth’s surface from space. In principle, three-dimensional radio-holographic remote sensing is possible by using new radio holographic equations to retrieve the radio field within the atmosphere from a radio field known at some interface o...

The atmosphere sounding experiment of the German CHAMP (CHAllenging Minisatellite Payload) satellite mission was activated on February 11, 2001. Since then more than 110,000 occultations were recorded as of mid-December 2002. The results of nearly two years CHAMP GPS (Global Positioning System) occultation measurements and data analysis have shown, that significant improvements of the GPS radio...

The Global Positioning System/Meteorology (GPS/MET) Program was established in 1993 by the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) to demonstrate active limb sounding of the Earth's atmosphere using the radio occultation technique. The demonstration system observes occulted GPS satellite signals received by a low Earth orbiting (LEO) satellite, MicroLab1, launched April 3, 1995. ...

7 In recent years, the global positioning system (GPS) has been exploited via radio occultation techniques to obtain proÿles of refractivity, temperature, pressure and water vapor in the neutral atmosphere and electron density in the ionosphere. The 9 GPS=MET experiment, which placed a GPS receiver in a low-Earth orbit, provided a wealth of data which was used to test this concept and the accur...
