Linear polarization sensitivity of SeGA detectors
نویسنده
چکیده
Parity is a key observable in nuclear spectroscopy. Linear polarization measurements of γ-rays are a probe to access the parities of energy levels. Utilizing the segmentation of detectors in the Segmented Germanium Array (SeGA) at the NSCL and analyzing the positions of interaction therein allows the detectors to be used as Compton polarimeters. Unlike other segmented detectors, SeGA detectors are irradiated from the side to utilize the transversal segmentation for better Doppler corrections. Sensitivity in such an orientation has previously been untested. A linear polarization sensitivity Q ≈ 0.14 has been measured in the 350-keV energy range for SeGA detectors using α-γ correlations from a Cf source.

Why do dusk-active cockchafers detect polarization in the green? The polarization vision in Melolontha melolontha is tuned to the high polarized intensity of downwelling light under canopies during sunset.
In the retina of dusk-active European cockchafers, Melolontha melolontha, the linear polarization of downwelling light (skylight or light from the tree canopy) is detected by photoreceptors in upward-pointing ommatidia with maximal sensitivity at 520 nm in the green portion of the spectrum. To date no attempt has been made to answer the question of why these beetles detect polarization in the g...
متن کاملRHESSI as a Hard X-Ray Polarimeter
Although designed primarily as a hard X-ray imager and spectrometer, the Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI) is also capable of measuring the polarization of hard X-rays (20–100 keV) from solar flares. This capability arises from the inclusion of a small unobstructed Be scattering element that is strategically located within the cryostat that houses the array of nine germaniu...
متن کاملSensitivity of γ-Ray Detectors to Polarization
The EGRET instrument aboard CGRO is the largest γ-ray detector to date and has collected several thousand photons above 30 MeV for the strongest sources, the Vela and Crab pulsars. Most of the energy output of young pulsars is in beamed γ rays which emission models predict to posses a high degree of linear polarization (eg. Romani and Yadigaroglu 1995), and polarization observations would prove...

متن کاملSingle photon detector with high polarization sensitivity
Polarization is one of the key parameters of light. Most optical detectors are intensity detectors that are insensitive to the polarization of light. A superconducting nanowire single photon detector (SNSPD) is naturally sensitive to polarization due to its nanowire structure. Previous studies focused on producing a polarization-insensitive SNSPD. In this study, by adjusting the width and pitch...
