Source Size Limitation from Variabilities of a Lensed Quasar
نویسنده
چکیده
In the case of gravitationally-lensed quasars, it is well-known that there is a time delay between occurrence of the intrinsic variabilities in each split image. Generally, the source of variabilities has a finite size, and there are time delays even in one image. If the origin of variabilities is widely distributed, say over > ∼ 100 pc as whole, variabilities between split images will not show a good correlation even though their origin is identical. Using this fact, we are able to limit the whole source size of variabilities in a quasar below the limit of direct resolution by today’s observational instruments. Origin of Chromatic Features in Multiple Quasars Variability, Dust, or Microlensing
Aims. In some of the lensed quasars, color differences between multiple images are observed at optical/near-infrared wavelengths. There are three possible origins of the color differences: intrinsic variabilities of quasars, differential dust extinction, and quasar microlensing. We examine how these three possible scenarios can reproduce the observed chromaticity. Methods. We evaluate how much ...
متن کاملSmooth matter and source size in microlensing simulations of gravitationally lensed quasars
Several gravitationally lensed quasars are observed with anomalous magnifications in pairs of images that straddle a critical curve. Simple theoretical arguments suggest that the magnification of these images should be approximately equivalent, whereas one image is observed to be significantly demagnified. Microlensing provides a possible explanation for this discrepancy. There are two key para...
متن کاملThe accretion disc in the quasar SDSS J0924+0219
We present single-epoch multi-wavelength optical-NIR observations of the “anomalous” lensed quasar SDSS J0924+0219, made using the Magellan 6.5-metre Baade telescope at Las Campanas Observatory, Chile. The data clearly resolve the anomalous bright image pair in the lensed system, and exhibit a strong decrease in the anomalous flux ratio with decreasing wavelength. This is interpreted as a resul...
متن کاملA New Method to Map Flares in Quasars
Recently, Chartas et al. (2001) detected a rapid X-ray flare in the gravitationally lensed, multiple image quasar RX J0911.4+0551. Dramatic events, such as rapid X-ray flares, are useful in providing high precision measurements of the time delays between multiple images. In this paper, we argue that there is a new possibility in measurements of time delays between multiple images of gravitation...
متن کاملDiscovery of Multiply Imaged Galaxies behind the Cluster and Lensed Quasar
We have identified three multiply imaged galaxies in Hubble Space Telescope images of the redshift z = 0.68 cluster responsible for the large-separation quadruply lensed quasar, SDSS J1004+4112. Spectroscopic redshifts have been secured for two of these systems using the Keck I 10m telescope. The most distant lensed galaxy, at z = 3.332, forms at least four images, and an Einstein ring encompas...
