Rehabilitation Results of a Hemiparatic Subject with Sturge- Weber Syndrome and Intractable Epilepsy

چکیده
This study presents the results of a rehabilitation program in a spastic hemiparetic subject who had undergone hemispherectomy because of SturgeWeber syndrome and intractable epilepsy. Sturge-Weber syndrome includes unilateral cerebral cortical angiomatosis, which often leads to progressive cerebral dysfunction and epileptic seizures that are medically difficult to control. A three-year-old girl who was followed-up for 2.5 years after a diagnosis of Sturge-Weber syndrome, intractable epilepsy and right spastic hemiparesis was hospitalized at the Department of Neurosurgery for epilepsy surgery since the frequency of her seizures had increased. The functional status and quality of life of our subject, whose seizures disappeared after hemispherectomy, improved after the rehabilitation program. ©2004, Fırat Üniversitesi, Tıp Fakültesi

Sturge-Weber syndrome consists of a constellation of symptoms and signs including a facial nevus (port wine stain), seizure and hemiparesis. In many cases it may associate with mental retardation. متن کاملA pilot study of the modified Atkins diet for Sturge-Weber syndrome.
The modified Atkins diet (MAD) is a dietary treatment for epilepsy which does not restrict fluids or calories. This theoretically makes the MAD safer than the ketogenic diet for children with Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS). Five children aged 4-18 years with SWS and at least monthly intractable seizures were started prospectively on the MAD for 6 months. All children had urinary ketosis and seizur...
متن کاملPresurgical Language Mapping in Patients With Intractable Epilepsy: A Review Study
Introduction: about 20% to 30% of patients with epilepsy are diagnosed with drug-resistant epilepsy and one third of these are candidates for epilepsy surgery. Surgical resection of the epileptogenic tissue is a well-established method for treating patients with intractable focal epilepsy. Determining language laterality and locality is an important part of a comprehensive epilepsy program befo...
متن کاملVertical parasagittal hemispherotomy for Sturge–Weber syndrome in early infancy: case report and literature review
INTRODUCTION The authors here present a rare case of a 3-month-old infant with unilateral Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS) who had excellent seizure control and no aggravation of previous existed neurological deficits after vertical parasagittal hemispherotomy (VPH). To our knowledge, this patient with SWS was the youngest one who received VPH. CASE DESCRIPTION The use of VPH results in a successf...

OBJECTIVES To study the outcome of disconnective epilepsy surgery for intractable hemispheric and sub-hemispheric pediatric epilepsy. METHODS A retrospective analysis of the epilepsy surgery database was done in all children (age <18 years) who underwent a peri-insular hemispherotomy (PIH) or a peri-insular posterior quadrantectomy (PIPQ) from April 2000 to March 2011. All patients underwent ...
