چکیده

Global warming is attributed to increasing greenhouse gas emissions and mounting concentrations of carbon dioxide and other gases in the atmosphere. Since the middle of the 19th century, increasing worldwide anthropogenic activity is said to have given rise to a steady increase of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. This is corroborated by direct measurement of CO2 concentrations at Mauna Loa Laboratory in Hawaii (USA). The CO2, present in the atmosphere as a trace gas, has an average atmospheric concentration of 280 ppmv. In 1958 the observed concentration was 315 ppmv, which suggested an increase of about 0.5 ppmv per year in the initial half of the 20th century. In 2005 the measured concentration of CO2 was 374 ppmv, suggesting an increase of about 1 ppmv per year in the latter part of the 20th century. The rising concentration of CO2 is ascribed mainly to the use of fossil fuels—coal, oil and gas—for energy production and consumption. According to the International Energy Outlook 2007, world energy consumption is expected to grow from 442 quadrillion Btu (~ 750 billion boe) in 2004 to 702 quadrillion Btu (~ 1200 bboe) in 2030. In view of coal meeting 40% of world wide electricity needs and its high contribution to greenhouse gas emissions, it is imperative that options for reducing emissions from coal use be explored.

Feasibility of Air Capture

Capturing CO2 from air, referred to as air capture, is being proposed as a viable climate change mitigation technology. Technically, air capture is not a new technology; industrial applications can be traced back to the 1930s. This paper explores the feasibility of this technology as a climate change mitigation option. Two different pathways of air capture are assessed: direct air capture, whic...

Summary of the Ipcc Special Report on Carbon Dioxide Capture and Storage

Carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) is an option for reducing atmospheric emissions of CO2 from human activities. CCS involves the use of technology to first collect and concentrate the CO2 produced at industrial and energy-related sources, transport it to a suitable storage location, and then store it away from the atmosphere for a long period of time. The IPCC Special Report assesses the...

CO2 Removal from Air in a Countercurrent Rotating Packed Bed, Experimental Determination of Height of Transfer Unit

Carbon dioxide capture is a key issue in climate change mitigation. For decades the removal of carbon dioxide has been an essential step in many industrial processing operations such as the synthesis of ammonia, natural gas purification, and oil refining. In this study, a rotating packed bed has been designed for absorption of carbon dioxide from an air stream. The rotating packed bed is a comp...

Land-use and carbon cycle responses to moderate climate change: implications for land-based mitigation?

Climate change has impacts on agricultural yields, which could alter cropland requirements and hence deforestation rates. Thus, land-use responses to climate change might influence terrestrial carbon stocks. Moreover, climate change could alter the carbon storage capacity of the terrestrial biosphere and hence the land-based mitigation potential. We use a global spatially explicit economic land...

Balancing climate change mitigation and environmental protection interests in the EU Directive on carbon capture and storage

The EU Climate and Energy Package highlights the potential contradictions between the climate change imperative of reducing GHGs emissions and the importance to maintain environmental integrity. While the package supports climate change mainstreaming, it remains to be seen to what extent it succeeds in achieving internal environmental integration between climate change mitigation and other envi...

Optimal bioenergy power generation for climate change mitigation with or without carbon sequestration

Restricting global warming below 2 °C to avoid catastrophic climate change will require atmospheric carbon dioxide removal (CDR). Current integrated assessment models (IAMs) and Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change scenarios assume that CDR within the energy sector would be delivered using bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS). Although bioenergy-biochar systems (BEBCS) can als...
