Recent years have seen dramatic progress in the production and understanding of pluripotent cells, which, researchers hope, will ultimately provide the option of creating replacement cells, tissues or organs in the laboratory. There are currently three potential access routes to such cell therapies, including embryonic stem cells, induced pluripotent cells, and transdifferentiated cells (Curr. Biol. (2011), 21, R235–R237). However, challenges remain both in the fundamental science and in its translation to the clinic. The UK’s Medical Research Council (MRC), together with other research councils and the government’s Technology Strategy Board (TSB), has now outlined a detailed strategy suggesting what UK agencies and researchers should do over the next five years in order to retain their leading role in this field and drive it towards clinical application. The forward-looking report, titled “A strategy for UK regenerative medicine” (http://www.mrc.ac.uk/ Newspublications/News/MRC008536), builds on a previous government report taking stock of past and current developments in the field, an analysis of investment and funding streams, and the outcomes of a “key opinion leaders workshop” held last September.

An imaging roadmap for biology education: from nanoparticles to whole organisms.

Imaging techniques provide ways of knowing structure and function in biology at different scales. The multidisciplinary nature and rapid advancement of imaging sciences requires imaging education to begin early in the biology curriculum. Guided by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Roadmap initiatives, we incorporated a nanoimaging, molecular imaging, and medical imaging teaching unit into...

A protein roadmap to pluripotency and faithful reprogramming.

Embryonic stem (ES) cells are of great interest because of their capability of unlimited self-renewal and multilineage differentiation, thus serving as a potentially unlimited source for tissue replacement in regenerative medicine. ES cells possess factors that maintain and induce pluripotency, as demonstrated by successful reprogramming of somatic cells by fusion with ES cells. Understanding t...

Aarhus Regenerative Orthopaedics Symposium (AROS)

The combination of modern interventional and preventive medicine has led to an epidemic of ageing. While this phenomenon is a positive consequence of an improved lifestyle and achievements in a society, the longer life expectancy is often accompanied by decline in quality of life due to musculoskeletal pain and disability. The Aarhus Regenerative Orthopaedics Symposium (AROS) 2015 was motivated...

Deconstructing Stem Cell Tumorigenicity: A Roadmap to Safe Regenerative Medicine

Many of the earliest stem cell studies were conducted on cells isolated from tumors rather than from embryos. Of particular interest was research on embryonic carcinoma cells (EC), a type of stem cell derived from teratocarcinoma. The EC research laid the foundation for the later discovery of and subsequent work on embryonic stem cells (ESC). Both ESC isolated from the mouse (mESC) and then lat...
