Surface Energies and Thermodynamic Phase Stability in Nanocrystalline Aluminas

چکیده
Corundum, a-Al2O3, is the thermodynamically stable phase of coarsely crystalline aluminum oxide, but syntheses of nanocrystalline Al2O3 usually result in g-Al2O3. Adsorption microcalorimetry, thermogravimetric analyses, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller adsorption experiments, coupled with recently reported high-temperature solution calorimetry data, prove that g-Al2O3 has a lower surface energy than a-Al2O3 and becomes energetically stable at surface areas greater than 125 square meters per gram and thermodynamically stable at even smaller surface areas (for example, 75 square meters per gram at 800 kelvin). The results are in agreement with recent molecular dynamics simulations and provide conclusive experimental evidence that differences in surface energy can favor the formation of a particular polymorph.

Co3W2Si intermetallic compound was synthesized by mechanical alloying (MA) of W, Co and Si elemental powder mixtures. The phase composition of the milled products was evaluated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. Morphological evolutions were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results showed that high energy ball milling performed in the present work led to the format...
متن کاملNanostructured Gamma Alumina from Amorphous Precursors
Introduction Nanocrystalline gamma-phase (γ) alumina is among many polytypes of alumina that find extensive applications as a catalyst and catalytic supports. The most useful properties these aluminas provide as catalyst supports are high surface area and welldefined porosity. These properties result primarily from the nano-scale crystalline character of the alumina. The problem is that both th...

To improve drug selectivity toward target cells, one interesting approach for drug delivery is to use polymer nanoparticles. A two-layered ONIOM Becke3- LYP: UFF calculation was carried out to study the structural and thermodynamic properties of the interaction between acetamide derivatives and the PCA-PEG-PCA copolymers. The Interaction enthalpies and the Gibbs free energies between acetamide ...
متن کاملPhase transformation and size tuning in controlled-growth of nanocrystals via self-seeded nucleation with preferential thermodynamic stability.
Controlled growth of nanocrystals (NCs) is produced by self-seeded nucleation with preferential thermodynamic stability. The intermediate reactants undergo in situ phase transformation forming the final products. The growth followed by irreversible phase transformation leads to the complete separation of nucleation and growth, thereby allowing size tuning of the final NCs.
