MEASUREMENT IN DIGITAL MICROFLUIDICS Gaurav J. Shah, Saman Sadeghi, Huijiang Ding, Supin Chen,, R. Michael van Dam Crump Institute for Molecular Imaging and Department of Molecular & Medical Pharmacology, Biomedical Engineering Department, University of California, Los Angeles, USA ABSTRACT In this paper, we report on simplified and improved impedance detection in digital microfluidics for measurement of volume or composition based on electrical properties of the liquids. Compared to other approaches reported in the literature, the platform discussed here simplifies the external circuitry to a single precision resistor and inexpensive DAQ module, while at the same time improving upon detection accuracy and sensitivity. The increased sensitivity of the device enables precise volume measurement as well as dynamic measurement of analyte concentration in droplets that could be applied to chemical or biochemical assays or process monitoring.

On chip droplet characterization: a practical, high-sensitivity measurement of droplet impedance in digital microfluidics.

We demonstrate a new approach to impedance measurement on digital microfluidics chips for the purpose of simple, sensitive, and accurate volume and liquid composition measurement. Adding only a single series resistor to existing AC droplet actuation circuits, the platform is simple to implement and has negligible effect on actuation voltage. To accurately measure the complex voltage across the ...

Precise droplet volume measurement and electrode-based volume metering in digital microfluidics

In this work, for the first time, we demonstrate nanoscale droplet generation from a continuous electrowetting microchannel using a simple and precise imagebased droplet volume metering technique. One of the most popular ways of droplet generation in electrowetting devices is to split a droplet from a preloaded volume as a fluid reservoir. This method is effective, but lowers volume consistency...

The measurement of droplet size distribution of water-oil emulsion through NMR method

The effects of water/oil volume ratio, type and concentration of demulsifier, water salinity and mixing speed on the average water droplets size in water-oil emulsion are evaluated at different times through NMR measurements. The type and concentration of demulsifier have the greatest effects on the average droplet size with 38% and 31.5%, respectively. The water/oil volume ratio, water salinity...

Real-time Feedback Control of Droplet Generation for Ewod Digitial Microfluidics

Generating droplets of uniform volume is essential for the digital microfluidics systems, which use droplets as basic fluidic units. Recently we have shown that high uniformity (±%2) can be achieved by new firing sequence [1]. We have also confirmed accurate on-chip capacitive measurement of droplet volumes [1,2]. In the current paper, we develop feedback control system to defeat the random unc...

Label-free, high-throughput, electrical detection of cells in droplets.

Today, droplet based microfluidics has become a standard platform for high-throughput single cell experimentation and analysis. However, until now no label-free, integrated single cell detection and discrimination method in droplets is available. We present here a microfluidic chip for fast (>100 Hz) and label-free electrical impedance based detection of cells in droplets. The microfluidic glas...
