چکیده

Parallel machine scheduling problems concern the scheduling of n jobs on m machines to minimize some function of the job completion times. If preemption is not allowed, then most problems are not only NP-hard, but also very hard from a practical point of view. In this paper, we show that strong and fast linear programming lower bounds can be computed for an important class of machine scheduling problems with additive objective functions. Characteristic of these problems is that on each machine the order of the jobs in the relevant part of the schedule is obtained through some priority rule. To that end, we formulate these parallel machine scheduling problems as a set covering problems with an exponential number of binary variables, n covering constraints, and a single side constraint. We show that the linear programming relaxation can be solved eeciently by column generation, since the pricing problem is solvable in pseudo-polynomial time. We display this approach on the problem of minimizing total weighted completion time on m identical machines. Our computational results show that the lower bound is singularly strong and that the outcome of the linear program is often integral. Moreover, they show that our branch-and-bound algorithm that uses the linear programming lower bound outperforms the previously best algorithm.

A New ILP Model for Identical Parallel-Machine Scheduling with Family Setup Times Minimizing the Total Weighted Flow Time by a Genetic Algorithm

This paper presents a novel, integer-linear programming (ILP) model for an identical parallel-machine scheduling problem with family setup times that minimizes the total weighted flow time (TWFT). Some researchers have addressed parallel-machine scheduling problems in the literature over the last three decades. However, the existing studies have been limited to the research of independent jobs,...

Solving Parallel Machine Scheduling Problems by Column Generation

We consider a class of problems of scheduling n jobs on m identical, uniform, or unrelated parallel machines with an objective of minimizing an additive criterion. We propose a decomposition approach for solving these problems exactly. The decomposition approach rst formulates these problems as an integer program, and then reformulates the integer program, using Dantzig-Wolfe decomposition, as ...

A Row-and-Column Generation Method to a Batch Machine Scheduling Problem

This paper studies a batch machine scheduling problem in which decisions on grouping jobs into batches and scheduling batches on parallel machines are jointly made. To address the problem, we model it as two-stage set-partitioning (TSSP) type formulation with exponential number of rows and columns. To find solutions, we propose a row-and-column generation method. The proposed method starts with...

A column generation based decomposition algorithm for a parallel machine just-in-time scheduling problem

We propose a column generation based exact decomposition algorithm for the problem of scheduling n jobs with an unrestrictively large common due date on m identical parallel machines to minimize total weighted earliness and tardiness. We rst formulate the problem as an integer program, then reformulate it, using Dantzig-Wolfe decomposition, as a set partitioning problem with side constraints. B...

A fuzzy mixed-integer goal programming model for a parallel machine scheduling problem with sequence-dependent setup times and release dates

This paper presents a new mixed-integer goal programming (MIGP) model for a parallel machine scheduling problem with sequence-dependent setup times and release dates. Two objectives are considered in the model to minimize the total weighted flow time and the total weighted tardiness simultaneously. Due to the com-plexity of the above model and uncertainty involved in real-world scheduling probl...
