Gravitational Experiment below 1 Millimeter and Comment on Shielded Casimir Backgrounds for Experiments in the Micron Regime

چکیده
We present the status of an experimental test for gravitational strength forces below 1 mm. Our experiment uses small 1 kilohertz oscillators as test masses, with a stiff counducting shield between them to suppress backgrounds. At the present sensitivity of approximately 10 times gravitational strength, we see no evidence for new forces with interaction ranges between 75 μm and 1 mm. While the Casimir background is not expected to be significant at this range, an extension of the shielding technique we employ may be useful for reducing this background in experiments below a few microns. We describe a possible implementation.

Casimir Interaction between Absorbing and Meta Materials
The Casimir force is one of the most accessible experimental consequences of vacuum fluctuations in the macroscopic world. It is the most significant force between neutral, non-magnetic objects at distances on the micrometer scale and below. For many experiments searching for novel short-range forces predicted by unification models, theoretical calculations of the Casimir force are crucial and ...
متن کاملStronger constraints on non-Newtonian gravity from the Casimir effect
We review new constraints on the Yukawa-type corrections to Newtonian gravity obtained recently from gravitational experiments and from the measurements of the Casimir force. Special attention is paid to the constraints following from the most precise dynamic determination of the Casimir pressure between the two parallel plates by means of a micromechanical torsional oscillator. The possibility...
متن کاملCan dark energy emerge from quantum effects in a compact extra dimension?
The origin of the accelerated expansion of the universe is a major problem in both modern cosmology and theoretical physics. In quantum field theory, simple estimations of the vacuum contribution to the density energy of the universe are known to lead to catastrophically high values compared to observations. A gravitational Casimir effect from an additional compact dimension of space is known t...

Corrections to Newton's gravitational law inspired by extra dimensional physics and by the exchange of light and massless elementary particles between the atoms of two macrobodies are considered. These corrections can be described by the potentials of Yukawa-type and by the power-type potentials with different powers. The strongest up to date constraints on the corrections to Newton's gravitati...
متن کاملElectromechanical Performance of NEMS Actuator Fabricated from Nanowire under quantum vacuum fluctuations using GDQ and MVIM
The Casimir attraction can significantly interfere the physical response of nanoactuators. The intensity of the Casimir force depends on the geometries of interacting bodies. The present paper is dedicated to model the influence of the Casimir attraction on the electrostatic stability of nanoactuators made of cylindrical conductive nanowire/nanotube. An asymptotic solution, based on path-integr...
