Ga High albedo features are identified in association with barchan dunes in an equatorial inter-crater dune field on Mars using images from the MRO mission. This paper describes the morphometric properties of these features and their association with the present barchan dune field. We propose that these features are cemented aeolian deposits that form at the foot of the dune avalanche face. A possible terrestrial analog exists at White Sands National Monument, in south-central New Mexico, USA. The presence of these features suggests past episodes of dune migration in inter-crater dunefields and liquid water in the near sub-surface in sufficient quantity to cause the cementation of aeolian dune sediment. 2011 Elsevier Inc. Dune-Yardang Interactions in Becquerel Crater, Mars.

Isolated landscapes largely shaped by aeolian processes can occur on Earth, while the majority of Mars' recent history has been dominated by wind-driven activity. Resultantly, Martian landscapes often exhibit large-scale aeolian features, including yardang landforms carved from sedimentary-layered deposits. High-resolution orbital monitoring has revealed that persistent bedform activity is occu...

Automatic Delimitation of Regions with Aeolian Features on Mars

Introduction: The number of currently available images of the surface of Mars is in the order of the hundreds of thousands. These have been captured over the years by many different instruments on board automatic probes. They have diverse spectral characteristics, varying spatial resolutions and cover areas of different dimensions, providing global, regional and sometimes local views. To manual...

THE CAMEL PROJECT - CHARACTERIZATION AND CLASSIFICATION OF DUNE FIELDS ON MARS BASED ON EARTH. T. Barata1, P.Pina2,

Introduction: Dunes are common features on planetary surfaces where unconsolidated material is present in abundance and responds to an atmosphere capable of producing significant winds. Wind is the most important erosive agent on present-day Mars, and the availability of large amounts of loose sand and dust provides conditions for the existence of dune fields all over the planet. They are the m...

Dune Forms and Ages and Associated Oblate Depressions in the Chasma Boreale Region of Planum

Introduction: THEMIS and MOC images acquired over the Chasma Boreale contain key geologic and stratigraphic information relating to aeolian deposition and the Polar Layered Deposits (PLD). Preliminary analyses of THEMIS VIS and MOC images show a clear progression of morphologic change of dark albedo dune deposits along the chasma axis. Geologic Relations: The source for the dunes appears to be ...

An investigation of subfacies and representative microfacies of the Cretaceous Chishan Group in the Wubao fault zone of Gaoyou sag, Subei basin, China

This study aims to identify favorable oil–gas reservoir facies in the Chishan group of the Wubao fault zone (Gaoyou sag, Subei basin, China) using the methods of outcrops and cores observation, granularity analysis, scanning electron microscope, log data, etc. The results suggest that the Chishan group in the studied area mainly develops desert sedimentary system, and contains five kinds of fac...
