MAKING SENSE OF SUNSPOT DECAY I: Parabolic Decay Law and Gnevyshev–Waldmeier Relation

چکیده

In a statistical study of the decay of individual sunspots based on DPR data we find that the mean instantaneous area decay rate is related to the spot radius r and the maximal radius r0 as D = CD r/r0, CD = 32.0±0.26MSH/day. This implies that sunspots on the mean follow a parabolic decay law; the traditional linear decay law is excluded by the data. The validity of the Gnevyshev–Waldmeier relationship between the maximal area A0 and lifetime T of a spot group, A0/T ≃ 10MSH/day, is also demonstrated for individual sunspots. No evidence is found for a supposed supergranular “quantization” of sunspot areas. Our results strongly support the recent turbulent erosion model of sunspot decay while all other models are excluded. On the size distribution of sunspot groups in the Greenwich sunspot record 1874 - 1976

We investigate the size distribution of the maximum areas and the instantaneous distribution of areas of sunspot groups using the Greenwich sunspot group record spanning the interval 1874-1976. Both distributions are found to be well described by log-normal functions. Using a simple model we can transform the maximum area distribution into the instantaneous area distribution if the sunspot area...

Increasing Lifetime of Recurrent Sunspot Groups within the Greenwich Photoheliographic Results

Long-lived (>20 days) sunspot groups extracted from the Greenwich Photoheliographic Results (GPR) are examined for evidence of decadal change. The problem of identifying sunspot groups which are observed on consecutive solar rotations (recurrent sunspot groups) is tackled by first constructing manually an example dataset of recurrent sunspot groups and then using machine learning to generalise ...

Lost sunspot cycle in the beginning of Dalton minimum: New evidence and consequences

[1] We have recently suggested that one solar cycle was lost in the beginning of the Dalton minimum during 1790s [Usoskin et al., 2001]. Earlier, this cycle has been combined with the preceding activity to form the exceptionally long solar cycle 4 in 1784-1799 with an irregular phase evolution. Here we show that historical data of auroral occurrence provide independent evidence for the existenc...

Variations of the solar cycle profile in a solar dynamo with fluctuating dynamo governing parameters

Context. Solar cycles vary in their amplitude and shape. There are several empirical relations between various parameters linking cycle’s shape and amplitude, in particular the Waldmeier relations. Aims. As solar cycle is believed to be a result of the solar dynamo action, these relations require explanation in the framework of this theory. Here we aim to present a possible explanation of such ...

Objective Calibration of Sunspot Numbers

Waldmeier [1971] found a very tight relationship between the F10.7 solar radio flux and the sunspot number and suggested using the flux for an objective calibration of the sunspot number. He suggested that if this relationship changed later on, the sunspot number should be recalibrated, assuming that the calibration must have drifted with time. I repeat his analysis using data up to the present...
