Lessons from Wildfire Managing the Pattern of Forest Harvest

چکیده

One challenge facing today’s forest managers is how to preserve biological diversity while maintaining a competitive forest industry. These two objectives are frequently at odds. A new approach to landscape management in the Sub-Boreal Spruce (SBS) zone is suggested here. This approach calls for larger harvest units coupled with irregular boundaries, large leave areas outside the harvest zone, and many reserves of undisturbed timber within the harvested area. The goal is to create managed disturbances that more closely mimic the characteristics of wildfire disturbance.

Forests and rangelands? wildfire risk zoning using GIS and AHP techniques

Wildfire in forests and rangelands, apart from its initiating causes, is considered as an ecological disaster. Zoning natural areas according to their susceptibility to fire helps to put off operations and reduces catastrophic losses caused through a wise management plan. In this study, the zoning map of wildfire risk in forest and rangeland areas has been produced using GIS, Analytical Hierarc...

Spatial Optimization of Fuel Management Activities

We describe and assess several methods for scheduling fuel management treatments to achieve timber harvest and landscape pattern goals across space and time. Four landscape patterns of management activities are modeled (dispersed, clumped, random, and regular). The intent is to examine the effects of spatial and temporal placement of fuel management activities on resulting wildfire behavior. Th...

Spatial optimization of the pattern of fuel management activities and subsequent effects on simulated wildfires

Methods for scheduling forest management activities in a spatial pattern (dispersed, clumped, random, and regular) are presented, with the intent to examine the effects of placement of activities on resulting simulated wildfire behavior. Both operational and fuel reduction management prescriptions are examined, and a heuristic was employed to schedule the activities. The main hypothesis is that...

Assemblages of Vascular Plants on Logs and Stumps within 28-year-old Aspendominated Boreal Forests

This study examined the impact of logs and stumps on the understory composition of 28-yearold aspen-dominated boreal forests. Suitable logs covered more than five times the area of stumps in both harvest and wildfire stands. Logs and stumps were colonized by a significantly different assemblage of vascular plants than the forest floor. Initial colonization patterns on dead wood in both wildfire...
