Soil Quality and the Benefits of Crop Rotation, Reduced Tillage, and Manure Application

چکیده

U tah has a small, but regionally (and nationally, in the case of tart cherry) significant tree fruit industry producing over $23 million in orchard receipts (US Census Bureau, 2009) from about 8,000 acres statewide (42% tart cherry, 23% peaches, 21% apple, with the remainder in sweet cherries, apricots, pears and other minor crops; USDANASS, 2007). Hence, establishing proper interpretive guidelines for sufficient soil and tissue nutrient levels is vitally important in managing and maintaining orchard productivity and, thus, continued viability of this important industry. However, review of soil and tissue nutrient sufficiency information used in the state and regionally (through use of USU Analytical Laboratory services) indicates that the interpretive values are derived primarily from data generated in Oregon, Pennsylvania and New Jersey (James and Topper, 1993). As a result, under support from the Utah Horticulture Association, the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food, the USDA Specialty Crop Block Grant Continued on page 2

Effects of agricultural management on soil organic matter and carbon transformation – a review

Soil organic carbon (SOC) is the most often reported attribute and is chosen as the most important indicator of soil quality and agricultural sustainability. In this review, we summarized how cultivation, crop rotation, residue and tillage management, fertilization and monoculture affect soil quality, soil organic matter (SOM) and carbon transformation. The results confirm that SOM is not only ...

The role of soil organic matter in maintaining soil quality in continuous cropping systems

Maintenance and improvement of soil quality in continuous cropping systems is critical to sustaining agricultural productivity and environmental quality for future generations. This review focuses on lessons learned from long-term continuous cropping experiments. Soil organic carbon (SOC) is the most often reported attribute from long-term studies and is chosen as the most important indicator o...

Cropping systems, tillage and fertilization strategies for durum wheat performance and soil properties

Many sustainable agronomical practices can be adopted to contain environmental risks of crop production and, at the same time, sustain yield and quality. In this framework, the aim of this research was to study the effects of continuous cropping (CC) and crop rotation, tillage and fertilization strategies on durum wheat (Triticum durum Desf.) production. The responses of soil properties we...

Crop rotation and tillage effects on selected soil physical properties of a Typic Haploxerert in an irrigated semi-arid Mediterranean region

Physical, chemical and biological attributes of soil surface are significantly affected by tillage practices and crop rotation. The objective of this study was to determine the short-term (2006-2009) effects of conventional and conservational tillage practices on selected soil physical properties of a heavy clay soil under two wheat-corn and wheatlegume rotation in a semi-arid Mediterranean...

Surface soil quality in five midwestern cropland Conservation Effects Assessment Project watersheds

Soil quality (SQ) assessment is a proactive process for evaluating soil and crop management effects on biological, chemical, and physical indicators of soil health. Our objectives were to evaluate several SQ indicators within five Agricultural Research Service (ARS) experimental watersheds (WS) and determine if those indicators were affected by manure, tillage, or crop rotation histories. Ten s...

تأثیر کوتاه‌مدت خاک‌ورزی و کود دامی بر ویژگی‌های ساختمانی خاک

The increased potential for soil erosion and compaction due to continuous row crop production and intensive tillage is causing some concern and has led to the consideration of reduced tillage techniques as part of the solution. The objective of this study was to investigate the short-term (one-year) influences of different management practices on the physical properties of a sandy loam soil und...
