The Breakout of Relativistic Jets from Massive Wolf-rayet Stars

چکیده

New twoand three-dimensional calculations are presented of relativistic jet propagation and break out in massive Wolf-Rayet stars. Such jets are thought responsible for gamma-ray bursts. As it erupts, the highly relativistic jet core (3 to 5 degrees) is surrounded by a cocoon of less energetic, but still moderately relativistic ejecta (Γ ∼ 15) that expands and becomes visible at larger polar angles (∼ 10 degrees). These less energetic ejecta may be the origin of X-ray flashes and other high-energy transients which will be visible to a larger fraction of the sky, albeit to a shorter distance than common gamma-ray bursts. Jet stability is also examined in three-dimensional calculations. If the jet changes angle by more than three degrees in several seconds, it will dissipate, producing a broad beam with inadequate Lorentz factor to make a common gamma-ray burst. Wolf-Rayet stars probed by AMBER/VLTI

Massive stars deeply influence their surroundings by their luminosity and the injection of kinetic energy. So far, they have mostly been studied with spatially unresolved observations, although evidence of geometrical complexity of their wind are numerous. Interferometry can provide spatially resolved observations of massive stars and their immediate vicinity. Specific geometries (disks, jets, ...

Winds from massive stars: implications for the afterglows of γ-ray bursts

Recent observations suggest that long-duration γ-ray bursts (GRBs) and their afterglows are produced by highly relativistic jets emitted in core-collapse explosions. The pre-explosive ambient medium provides a natural test for the most likely progenitors of GRBs. Those stars that shed their envelopes most readily have short jet crossing times and are more likely to produce a GRB. We construct a...

Synthesis Models for Starburst Populations with Wolf-Rayet Stars

The prospects of utilizing Wolf-Rayet populations in starburst galaxies to infer the stellar content are reviewed. I discuss which Wolf-Rayet star features can be detected in an integrated stellar population. Specific examples are given where the presence of Wolf-Rayet stars can help understand galaxy properties independent of the O-star population. I demonstrate how populations with small age ...

Searching for hidden Wolf-Rayet stars in the Galactic Plane – 15 new Wolf-Rayet stars

We report the discovery of fifteen previously unknown Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars found as part of an infrared broad-band study of candidate WR stars in the Galaxy. We have derived an empirically-based selection algorithm which has selected ∼5000 WR candidate stars located within the Galactic Plane drawn from the GLIMPSE (midinfrared) and 2MASS (near-infrared) catalogues. Spectroscopic follow-up of 1...
