10.15 Annual and Interannual Variabilities of East Asian Monsoon Revealed by Spacebased Observations

چکیده
A signi cant portion of the world's population is under the in uence of monsoon changes. Understanding of physical processes governing the evolution of Asian monsoon is not only important for regional climate variation, but also crucial to global climate variation. Besides bringing rain to land, monsoons also change ocean currents, ocean upwelling, and coastal ecology. Over land the consequences of monsoon are, perhaps, well observed, but the ocean observations are still very sparse. Spaceborne microwave scatterometers and radiometers observe ocean surface with high spatial and temporal resolution, which provides an unprecedented opportunity to explore variability at the sea surface on various time scales.

Monsoon Climate Variabilities
The Asian monsoon consists of three subcomponents, Indian monsoon (IM), East Asian monsoon (EAM), and western North Pacific monsoon (WNPM). All these submonsoon systems exhibit remarkable intraseasonal and interannual variabilities. In this chapter, we will review recent progress in understanding the monsoon annual cycle and some of major issues related to the monsoon intraseasonal and interann...

متن کاملImpacts of the East Asian monsoon on lower tropospheric ozone over coastal South China
The impact of the East Asian monsoon (EAM) on climatology and interannual variability of tropospheric ozone (O3) over the coastal South China was investigated by analyzing 11 years of ozonesonde data over Hong Kong with the aid of Lagrangian dispersion modeling of carbon monoxide and calculation of an EAM index. It was found that the seasonal cycle of O3 in the lower troposphere is highly relat...
متن کاملSeven year satellite observations of the mean structures and variabilities in the regional aerosol distribution over the oceanic areas around the Indian subcontinent
Aerosol distribution over the oceanic regions around the Indian subcontinent and its seasonal and interannual variabilities are studied using the aerosol optical depth (AOD) derived from NOAA-14 and NOAA-16 AVHRR data for the period of November 1995–December 2003. The air-mass types over this region during the Asian summer monsoon season (June–September) are significantly different from those d...
متن کاملReview of Advance in Research on Asian Summer Monsoon
The Asian monsoon is the most significant component of the global climate system. During recent two decades, concerned efforts have been made to investigate the Asian monsoon. A substantial achievement has been made in basic physical processes, predictability and prediction since the MONEX of 1978-79. The major advance in our understanding about of the variability of the Asian summer monsoon ha...
