Correlation Length and Negative Phase Velocity in Isotropic Dielectric–magnetic Materials

چکیده
A composite material comprising randomly distributed spherical particles of two different isotropic dielectric–magnetic materials is homogenized using the second–order strong– property–fluctuation theory in the long–wavelength approximation. Whereas neither of the two constituent materials by itself supports planewave propagation with negative phase velocity (NPV), the homogenized composite material (HCM) can. The propensity of the HCM to support NPV propagation is sensitive to the distributional statistics of the constituent material particles, as characterized by a two–point covariance function and its associated correlation length. The scope for NPV propagation diminishes as the correlation length increases.

A New Condition to Identify Isotropic Dielectric–magnetic Materials Displaying Negative Phase Velocity
Non–dissipative mediums with both simultaneously negative permittivity and permeability were first investigated by Veselago [1] in 1968. These mediums support electromagnetic wave propagation in which the phase velocity is antiparallel to the direction of energy flow, and other unusual electromagnetic effects such as the reversal of the Doppler effect and Cerenkov radiation. After the publicati...

ABSTRACT: We report on a strategy for achieving negative phase velocity (NPV) in a homogenized composite medium (HCM) conceptualized using the Bruggeman formalism. The constituent material phases of the HCM do not support NPV propagation. The HCM and its constituent phases are isotropic dielectric–magnetic mediums; the real parts of their permittivities/permeabilities are negative–valued wherea...
متن کاملOrthogonal–Phase–Velocity Propagation of Electromagnetic Plane Waves
In an isotropic, homogeneous, nondissipative, dielectric–magnetic medium that is simply moving with respect to an inertial reference frame, planewave solutions of the Maxwell curl postulates can be such that the phase velocity and the time–averaged Poynting vector are mutually orthogonal. Orthogonal–phase–velocity propagation thus adds to the conventional positive–phase–velocity propagation and...
متن کاملOn mediums with negative phase velocity: a brief overview
Several issues relating to oppositely directed phase velocity and power flow are reviewed. A necessary condition for the occurrence of this phenomenon in isotropic dielectric–magnetic mediums is presented. Ramifications for aberration–free lenses, homogenization approaches, and complex mediums are discussed.
متن کاملCounterposition and negative phase velocity in uniformly moving dissipative materials
The Lorentz transformations of electric and magnetic fields were implemented to study (i) the refraction of linearly polarized plane waves into a half–space occupied by a uniformly moving material, and (ii) the traversal of linearly polarized Gaussian beams through a uniformly moving slab. Motion was taken to occur tangentially to the interface(s) and in the plane of incidence. The moving mater...
