چکیده

Hydrogels are widely used in the biomedical field. Their main purposes are either to deliver biological active agents or to temporarily fill a defect until they degrade and are followed by new host tissue formation. However, for this latter application, biodegradable hydrogels are usually not capable to sustain any significant load. The development of biodegradable hydrogels presenting load-bearing capabilities would open new possibilities to utilize this class of material in the biomedical field. In this work, an original formulation of biodegradable photo-crosslinked hydrogels based on hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) is presented. The hydrogels consist of short-length poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) chains in a star shape structure, obtained by introducing a tetra-functional chain transfer agent in the backbone of the hydrogels. They are cross-linked with a biodegradable N,O-dimethacryloyl hydroxylamine (DMHA) molecule sensitive to hydrolytic cleavage. We characterized the degradation properties of these hydrogels submitted to mechanical loadings. We showed that the developed hydrogels undergo long-term degradation and specially meet the two essential requirements of a biodegradable hydrogel suitable for load bearing applications: enhanced mechanical properties and low molecular weight degradation products. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Structural And Mechanical Behaviour Of P(Hema) Hydrogel For Lumbar Disc Prosthesis

Poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) p(HEMA) is a biocompatible polymer that forms a hydrogel when mixed with water. Water content and oxygen permeability, mechanical properties of p(HEMA) hydrogel can be controlled by cross-linking rate or by copolymerization; that is why p(HEMA) hydrogels have multiple biomedical applications. This paper objective was to analyse a biomaterial made of p(HEMA) for...

Evaluating the effect of pH on mechanical strength and cell compatibility of nanostructured collagen hydrogel by the plastic compression method

Objective(s): One of the main constraints of collagen hydrogel scaffolds for using in tissue engineering is mechanical weakness. Plastic compression (PC) is a physical method to overcome the mechanical limitation of collagen hydrogel. Materials and Methods: In this study, the effects of pH on mechanical and biological properties of PC hydrogels were investigated. Collagen hydrogels were fabrica...

Influence of free chains on the swelling pressure of PEG-HEMA and dex-HEMA hydrogels.

Insight in the osmotic behavior of degrading hydrogels is of great importance in the design of biodegradable hydrogels for biomedical applications. This study compares the degradation behavior of PEG-HEMA (hydroxyethylmethacrylated polyethylene glycol) and dex-HEMA (hydroxyethylmethacrylated dextran) hydrogels. The degradation of PEG-HEMA gels takes several months to over a year, while that of ...

Swelling and Mechanical Properties of Modified HEMA- based Superporous Hydrogels

Superporous hydrogels (SPHs), based on poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA), were prepared by adding minute amounts of an ioncomplexable hydrophilic acrylic acid. PHEMA SPHs are generally strong, but their swelling is minimal. To improve the swelling, different poly(HEMA-coacrylic acid) hydrogels were polymerized and crosslinked, then physically treated with divalent calcium and trivalent ...
