چکیده

Specialty forages are those that do not have a wide application in animal production systems of Texas. Other than beef cattle, systems that use cultivated forage can be considered atypical in our state. These include white-tailed deer, game birds (quail or turkey), exotic game, goats, sheep, domesticated rabbits or any other species that is primarily an herbivore. These animals generally require greater quality in their diets than do bulk (undiscriminating) grazers such as cattle, horses, donkeys, bison or Asiatic water buffalo. Selective grazers/browsers (the latter pluck individual leaves off forbs, bushes, trees and grass) usually harvest individual plant parts such as seeds, fruits or new leaves, which provide a greater concentration of available nutrients but are more diffi cult to collect. Grasses and legumes more palatable to selective grazers tend to be more diffi cult to maintain in pastures or range since they are generally less adapted to local conditions and are grazed (browsed) out more easily.

Influence of solid dairy manure and compost with and without alum on survival of indicator bacteria in soil and on potato.

We measured Escherichia coli, Enterococcus spp. and fecal coliform numbers in soil and on fresh potato skins after addition of solid dairy manure and dairy compost with and without alum (Al(2)(SO(4))(3)) treatment 1, 7, 14, 28, 179 and 297 days after application. The addition of dairy compost or solid dairy manure at rates to meet crop phosphorus uptake did not consistently increase E. coli and...

Fate of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium on carrots and radishes grown in fields treated with contaminated manure composts or irrigation water.

Three different types of compost, PM-5 (poultry manure compost), 338 (dairy cattle manure compost), and NVIRO-4 (alkaline-pH-stabilized dairy cattle manure compost), and irrigation water were inoculated with an avirulent strain of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium at 10(7) CFU g(-1) and 10(5) CFU ml(-1), respectively, to determine the persistence of salmonellae in soils containing these c...

Nutrient Availability to Corn From Dairy Manures and Fertilizer in a Calcareous Soil

The expansion of the dairy industry in southern Idaho has led to increased application of manures to meet crop nutrient demands that can alter the uptake pattern of both macronutrients and micronutrients. A greenhouse study was conducted to determine the effects of dairy manure, composted dairy manure, and fertilizer (monoammonium phosphate) application on soil test phosphorus (P), microbial ac...

Survival of Escherichia coli O157:H7 in soil and on carrots and onions grown in fields treated with contaminated manure composts or irrigation water

Many foodborne outbreaks of enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli O157:H7 infection have been associated with the consumption of contaminated vegetables. On-farm contaminations through contaminated manure or irrigation water application were considered likely sources of the pathogen for several outbreaks. Field studies were done to determine the survival of E. coli O157:H7 on two subterranean crop...

How Do Dairy Cows Perform When Fed Grass vs. Legume Diets?

INTRODUCTION Alfalfa is the primary forage fed to lactating dairy cows; however, there is renewed interest in utilizing grass forages in lactating dairy cow diets particularly because of farm nutrient management issues. Yield and perceived quality is generally lower for grass species compared to legumes while other agronomic factors such as longer stand life, requirement for nitrogen fertilizer...
