چکیده

The effects of forest management on soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) are important to understand not only because these are often master variables determining soil fertility but also because of the role of soils as a source or sink for C on a global scale. This paper reviews the literature on forest management effects on soil C and N and reports the results of a meta analysis of these data. The meta analysis showed that forest harvesting, on average, had little or no effect on soil C and N. Signi®cant effects of harvest type and species were noted, with sawlog harvesting causing increases (‡18%) in soil C and N and wholetree harvesting causing decreases (ÿ6%). The positive effect of sawlog harvesting appeared to be restricted to coniferous species. Fire resulted in no signi®cant overall effects of ®re on either C or N (when categories were combined); but there was a signi®cant effect of time since ®re, with an increase in both soil C and N after 10 years (compared to controls). Signi®cant differences among ®re treatments were found, with the counterintuitive result of lower soil C following prescribed ®re and higher soil C following wild®re. The latter is attributed to the sequestration of charcoal and recalcitrant, hydrophobic organic matter and to the effects of naturally invading, post-®re, N-®xing vegetation. Both fertilization and N-®xing vegetation caused marked overall increases in soil C and N. # 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Fire effects on temperate forest soil C and N storage.

Temperate forest soils store globally significant amounts of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N). Understanding how soil pools of these two elements change in response to disturbance and management is critical to maintaining ecosystem services such as forest productivity, greenhouse gas mitigation, and water resource protection. Fire is one of the principal disturbances acting on forest soil C and N st...

اثر چهار نوع درخت پهن‌برگ بر ذخیره‌سازی و معدنی‌شدن کربن و نیتروژن خاک در عرصه جنگلی شهرستان نور

The effect of broad-leaved forest trees (Alnus glotinusa, Ulmus glabra, Popolus caspica and Parrotia persica) and their canopy position on soil C and N storage and mineraization in the plain forest areas of Noor was investigated. Soil samples were taken from two positions (near and away from the main stem) with the microplots of 30×30×15 cm. Litter (C and N), soil physical (bulk density, textur...

Harvest impacts on soil carbon storage in temperate forests

Forest soil carbon (C) storage is a significant component of the global C cycle, and is important for sustaining forest productivity. Although forest management may have substantial impacts on soil C storage, experimental data from forest harvesting studies have not been synthesized recently. To quantify the effects of harvesting on soil C, and to identify sources of variation in soil C respons...

Relationship between Dead Trees with Soil Physico-chemical Properties and Earthworm in Mixed Broad-leaved Forest Stand (Case study: Sarcheshmeh Forest, Chaloos)

Dead trees protection, has a key role in structural and biogeochemical processes in forest ecosystems. Some aspects of dead tree dynamics have been carefully studied, but the kind and decay degree of dead trees and forest soil properties have not received enough attention. The aim of this research was to study the effect of a kind and decay degree of dead trees on soil mineral properties in the...

Effects of runoff harvesting through semi-circular bund on some soil characteristics

In this study, to investigate the effects of runoff harvesting on soil properties in the semiarid forest, runoff harvesting through semi-circular bund was considered as a method to conserve soil and thereby combat tree mortality. In order to evaluate this hypothesis, runoff was harvested through the semi-circular bund affecting soil quality and moisture storage. The selected forest site is loca...
