چکیده

This paper shows how revealed preference relations, observed under general budget sets, can be extended using closure operators which impose certain assumptions on preferences. Common extensions are based on the assumption that preferences are convex and/or monotonic, but we also consider satiated single-peaked preferences. For the obtained extended relations, the paper provides necessary and suffi cient conditions for the existence of continuous complete extensions of the revealed preference relation. These results lead to a nonparametric analysis of revealed preference data which allows to recover all that can be said about a decision maker’s preferences. The approach makes explicit what additional assumptions are imposed on the revealed preference relation. For example, Varian’s (1982) “revealed preferred set” imposes monotonicity and convexity. The approach focuses strictly on what is observable. In particular, it does not assume that we observe all bundles on a budget among which the decision maker is indiff erent. Heterogeneity and the nonparametric analysis of consumer choice: conditions for invertibility

This paper considers structural nonparametric random utility models for continuous choice variables. It provides sufficient conditions on random preferences to yield reducedform systems of nonparametric stochastic demand functions that allow global invertibility between demands and random utility components. Invertibility is essential for global identification of structural consumer demand mode...

Best nonparametric bounds on demand responses

This paper uses revealed preference inequalities to provide the tightest possible (best) nonparametric bounds on predicted consumer responses to price changes using consumer-level data over a finite set of relative price changes. These responses are allowed to vary nonparametrically across the income distribution. This is achieved by combining the theory of revealed preference with the semipara...

Theory of Compressive Sensing via 1-Minimization: a Non-RIP Analysis and Extensions

Compressive sensing (CS) is an emerging methodology in computational signal processing that has recently attracted intensive research activities. At present, the basic CS theory includes recoverability and stability: the former quantifies the central fact that a sparse signal of length n can be exactly recovered from far fewer than n measurements via 1-minimization or other recovery techniques,...

Canonical utility functions and continuous preference extensions

I define canonical utility functions via an explicit formula that inherits semicontinuity, continuity, Cauchy continuity, and uniform continuity from preferences. This construction is used to (i) show Rader’s and Debreu’s theorems in a fast and transparent way, (ii) refine these results for Cauchy and uniformly continuous preferences on a metric space X , (iii) extend such preferences from X to...
