Mesophase formation in two-component cylindrical bottlebrush polymers.

چکیده
When two types of side chains (A,B) are densely grafted to a (stiff) backbone and the resulting bottlebrush polymer is in a solution under poor solvent conditions, an incompatibility between A and B leads to microphase separation in the resulting cylindrical brush. The possible types of ordering are reminiscent of the ordering of block copolymers in cylindrical confinement. Starting from this analogy, Leibler's theory of microphase separation in block copolymer melts is generalized to derive a description of the system in the weak segregation limit. Also molecular dynamics simulation results of a corresponding coarse-grained bead-spring model are presented. Using side chain lengths up to N = 50 effective monomers, the ratio of the Lennard-Jones energy parameter between unlike monomers (ε(AB)) and monomers of the same kind (ε(AA) = ε(BB)) is varied. Various correlation functions are analyzed to study the conditions when (local) Janus-cylinder-type ordering and when (local) microphase separation in the direction along the cylinder axis occurs. Both the analytical theory and the simulations give evidence for short-range order due to a tendency toward microphase separation in the axial direction, with a wavelength proportional to the side chain gyration radius, irrespective of temperature and grafting density, for a wide range of these parameters.

Diagram of States of Bottlebrush Polymers under Poor Solvent Conditions
Introduction Bottlebrush polymers are macromolecules which consist of a long chain serving as “backbone” onto which flexible side chains are densely grafted. There is a lot of recent interest in both the synthesis of these macromolecules and characterization of physical properties by various experimental techniques (light and neutron scattering, atomic force microscopy, electron microscopy, etc...
متن کاملThermoresponsive PNIPAAM bottlebrush polymers with tailored side-chain length and end-group structure.
We explore the phase behaviour, solution conformation, and interfacial properties of bottlebrush polymers with side-chains comprised of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAM), a thermally responsive polymer that exhibits a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) in water. PNIPAAM bottlebrush polymers with controlled side-chain length and side-chain end-group structure are prepared using a "gr...
متن کاملSmall-Angle Neutron Scattering Analysis of Bottlebrush Polymers Prepared via Grafting-Through Polymerization
Bottlebrush polymers are highly branched macromolecules with potential applications in antifouling coatings, rheological modifiers, and drug delivery systems. However, the solution conformation of bottlebrush polymers has been studied in only a limited set of materials made primarily by grafting-from polymerization. Here we present small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements on a series ...
متن کاملSynthesis of bottlebrush polymers via transfer-to and grafting-through approaches using a RAFT chain transfer agent with a ROMP-active Z-group†
A novel dithiocarbamate chain transfer agent (CTA1) with a directly polymerizable Z-group was synthesized for use in reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT). This CTA effectively mediated RAFT polymerization of styrenic and acrylic monomers with dispersities (Đ) < 1.08. Utilizing the polymerizable Z-group on the ω-chain end that is inherited from the RAFT process,...
متن کاملThermotropic Liquid Crystalline Behavior of an Amphiphilic Polymer Lacking Mesogens
The thermotropic liquid crystalline behavior of a new kind of amphiphilic polymer without mesogens is reported. The existence and structure for the polymeric mesophase are confirmed and characterized by DSC, X-ray diffraction, optical polarized microscopy, and temperature-dependent FTIR. Due to strong interactions between pendent long alkyl chains, we conclude that some hydrophobic semirigid ro...
