چکیده

Massive protostars evolve from hot cores to ultra-compact H II regions and eventually form classical H II regions; however, details of this evolution are far from understood. A few years ago, a new class of exceptionally small and dense objects, so-called hyper-compact H II regions, was discovered. They are believed to represent a transitional stage in early massive stellar evolution. Thus, their understanding is crucial for the formation of massive stars. In the present study, we investigate the morphology and the evolutionary stage of one of these hypercompact H II regions, M17-UC1. We investigated the source at infrared and radio wavelengths. M17-UC1 could be resolved into two emission areas separated by a dark lane reminiscent of a circumstellar disk. All observational evidence as well as model calculations suggest that M17-UC1 is surrounded by a disk of cold dust. This first detection of a circumstellar disk around a young hyper-compact H II region is in agreement with the expectations of the disk accretion model for massive star formation. Subject headings: stars: formation, circumstellar matter, pre-main sequence – open clusters and associations: general, individual (M17)

The birth of massive twins in M 17

We have imaged the ultra-compact H ii region M 17-UC1 at J, K, N, Q and 1.3 cm. A comparison with results from earlier epochs reveals an increase of the emitted flux both in the mid-infrared and radio continuum. Our N and Q images exhibit a second source of comparable strength 5′′ southwest of M 17-UC1. While M 17-UC1 is not visible at J, faint at K but very bright at 1.3 cm, the second souther...

A survey of the chemical properties of the M17 and Cepheus A cloud cores.

We present the results of a systematic survey of the chemical properties of two giant molecular cloud (GMC) cores in M17 and Cepheus A. In all, we have mapped the emission from 32 molecular transitions of 13 molecules and seven isotopic variants over a 4' x 5' region in each core. Each map includes known sites of massive star formation, as well as the more extended quiescent material. In M17 mo...

We have carried out VLA Zeeman observations of H i absorption lines toward the H ii region in the M17 giant molecular cloud complex. The resulting maps have 60×45 spatial resolution and 0.64 km s velocity separation. The H i absorption lines toward M17 show between 5 and 8 distinct velocity components which vary spatially in a complex manner across the source. We explore possible physical conne...
