Breast cancer in older woman: can axillary dissection be omitted?
نویسندگان
چکیده
Methods From 1995 to 1998, 435 patients over 45 year old with breast cancer up to 1.2 cm and clinically uninvolved axilla were randomized in two arms: 214 to conservative surgery without axillary dissection and 221 to conservative surgery without axillary dissection plus axillary radiotherapy. Our Breast Unit participated in the study with 25 patients. Results After a median follow up of 63 months, 3 (1.5%) axillary metastases were found in the no treatment arm and 1 (0.5%) in the radiotherapy arm. The overall 5-year disease free survival was 96%.

Significance of histopathological features of breast carcinoma and its correlation for desision of future therapy
Breast cancer is one of the most common malignancies among women and considered as the first caise of mortality in females suffering from malignant processes.axillary lymph node metastasis (ALNM)is the most important predictor of survival in patient with breast carcinoma.the purpose of this study was to determine the association between the incidence of ALNM and morphologic criteria by univaria...
متن کاملStandardization of whole breast radiotherapy is required for safe omission of axillary lymph node dissection in breast cancer patients
Background: The purpose of this study was to assess the dose distribution and coverage of level Ⅰ-Ⅱ axillary lymph nodes during whole breast tangential field radiotherapy (RT) after breast-conserving surgery in patients with breast cancer. Materials and Methods: The level Ⅰ-Ⅱ axillary lymph node volumes were retrospectively contoured by a single radiation oncologist based on computed tomography...
متن کاملDissection axillary lymph node count in patient with breast cancer followed by neoadjuvant therapy
Introduction: Breast cancer is the most common cancer and the second cause of death in women. It is essential to have the highest level of confidence in axillary staging assessment. Many surgeons and pathologists believe that fewer lymph nodes are present in axillary dissection specimens of women treated by neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Consequently, the purpose of this study was to compare the lym...
متن کاملRegional radiotherapy versus an axillary lymph node dissection after lumpectomy: a safe alternative for an axillary lymph node dissection in a clinically uninvolved axilla in breast cancer. A case control study with 10 years follow up
BACKGROUND The standard treatment of the axilla in breast cancer used to be an axillary lymph node dissection. An axillary lymph node dissection is known to give substantial risks of morbidity. In recent years the sentinel node biopsy has become common practice. Future randomized study results will determine whether the expected decrease in morbidity can be proven. METHODS Before the introduc...
متن کاملEvolution of axillary nodal staging in breast cancer: clinical implications of the ACOSOG Z0011 trial.
BACKGROUND Management of the axilla in breast cancer patients has evolved from routine axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) for all patients to a highly selective approach based on the assessment of the sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs) as well as tumor and patient characteristics. Although ALND continues to have an important role in staging and regional control for many breast cancer patients, rece...
