Estimating Net Primary Production of Turfgrass in an Urban-Suburban Landscape with QuickBird Imagery

چکیده
Vegetation is a basic component of urban-suburban environments with significant area coverage. As a major vegetation type in US cities, urban turfgrass provides a range of important ecological services. This study examined the biological carbon fixation of turfgrass in a typical residential neighborhood by linking ground-based measurements, high resolution satellite remote sensing, and ecological modeling. The spatial distribution of turfgrass and its vegetative conditions were mapped with QuickBird satellite imagery. The significant amount of shadows existing in the imagery were detected and removed by taking advantage of the high radiometric resolution of the data. A remote sensing-driven production efficiency model was developed and parameterized with field biophysical measurements to estimate annual net primary production of turfgrass. The results indicated that turfgrass accounted for 38% of land cover in the study area. Turfgrass assimilated 0–1,301 g·C·m·yr depending on vegetative conditions and management intensity. The average annual net primary production per unit turfgrass cover by golf course grass (1,100.5 g·C·m) was much higher than that by regular lawn grass (771.2 g·C·m). However, lawn grass contributed more to the total net primary production than golf course grass due to its larger area coverage, although with higher spatial variability.

Continuous measurements of net CO2 exchange by vegetation and soils in a suburban landscape
[1] In a suburban neighborhood of Minneapolis–Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA, we simultaneously measured net CO2 exchange of trees using sap flow and leaf gas exchange measurements, net CO2 exchange of a turfgrass lawn using eddy covariance from a portable tower, and total surface-atmosphere CO2 fluxes (FC) using an eddy covariance system on a tall tower. Two years of continuous measurements showed...
متن کاملChanges in land use driven by urbanization impact nitrogen cycling and the microbial community composition in soils
Transition of populations from rural to urban living causes landscape changes and alters the functionality of soil ecosystems. It is unclear how this urbanization disturbs the microbial ecology of soils and how the disruption influences nitrogen cycling. In this study, microbial communities in turfgrass-grown soils from urban and suburban areas around Xiamen City were compared to microbial comm...
متن کاملExtraction of Buildings from Quickbird Imagery – What Is the Relevance of Urban Context and Heterogeneity?
The high frequency and scope of spatial changes in cities demands ways of expediting the production and updating of large-scale geographic information. For that purpose, current and future very high spatial resolution satellite imagery (VHR) and semiautomated object-based image analysis methods may be an advantageous alternative to classical data sources and methods, i.e., aerial photography an...
متن کاملExtraction of Buildings from QuickBird Imagery for Municipal Use – the Relevance of Urban Context and Heterogeneity
Lisbon is both a historical and modern city having a dynamic landscape, where increasingly diverse urban forms and materials coexist. This complex reality is possibly causing the feature extraction process from imagery to become more challenging. This study tests the semiautomated extraction of buildings from a QuickBird image in urban areas with different characteristics, and explores the impa...
متن کاملLand Cover Classification in a Complex Urban-Rural Landscape with Quickbird Imagery.
High spatial resolution images have been increasingly used for urban land use/cover classification, but the high spectral variation within the same land cover, the spectral confusion among different land covers, and the shadow problem often lead to poor classification performance based on the traditional per-pixel spectral-based classification methods. This paper explores approaches to improve ...
