Sensorimotor Gating: Startle Submits to Presynaptic Inhibition

چکیده
Prepulse inhibition is a type of sensorimotor gating that is disrupted in some neuropsychiatric disorders. Its cellular basis has eluded investigators but now, using a molluscan model system, a cellular mechanism has been established.

Impaired prepulse inhibition of acoustic and tactile startle response in patients with Huntington's disease.
The corpus striatum serves a critical function in inhibiting involuntary, intrusive movements. Striatal degeneration in Huntington's disease results in a loss of motor inhibition, manifested by abnormal involuntary choreiform movements. Sensorimotor inhibition, or "gating", can be measured in humans using the startle reflex: the startle reflex is normally inhibited when the startling stimulus i...
متن کاملDifferential effect of clomipramine on habituation and prepulse inhibition in dominant versus subordinate rats
Many patients with depression have comorbidities associated with an impairment of sensorimotor gating, such as e.g. schizophrenia, Parkinson Disease, or Alzheimer disease. Anti-depressants like clomipramine that modulate serotonergic or norepinephrinergic neurotransmission have been shown to impact sensorimotor gating, it is therefore important to study potential effects of clomipramine in orde...
متن کاملThe medial septum mediates impairment of prepulse inhibition of acoustic startle induced by a hippocampal seizure or phencyclidine.
The involvement of the septohippocampal system on the impaired sensorimotor gating induced by phencyclidine (PCP) or by an electrically induced hippocampal seizure was examined in behaving rats. An impaired sensorimotor gating, measured by prepulse inhibition (PPI) of the acoustic startle response, was observed following a hippocampal afterdischarge (AD) or systemic injection of PCP and was acc...
متن کاملSensorimotor gating in larval zebrafish.
Control of behavior in the natural environment where sensory stimuli are abundant requires superfluous information to be ignored. In part, this is achieved through selective transmission, or gating of signals to motor systems. A quantitative and clinically important measure of sensorimotor gating is prepulse inhibition (PPI) of the startle response, impairments in which have been demonstrated i...
متن کاملModulation of Prepulse Inhibition and Startle Reflex by Emotions: A Comparison between Young and Older Adults
This study examined whether or not the acoustic startle response and sensorimotor gating may be modulated by emotions differentially between young and older adults. Two groups of participants (mean age Young: 24 years old; Elderly: 63.6 years old) were presented with three types of auditory stimuli (Startle alone, High or Low frequency Prepulse) while viewing pleasant, neutral, or unpleasant im...
