What can we learn from the intensity - time profiles of large gradual solar energetic particle events ?

چکیده
Large gradual solar energetic particle events (LGSEPEs, ≥10pfu in the >10MeV channel as measured by GOES) are closely associated with coronal mass ejections (CMEs). The intensity-time profile of a LGSEPE reveals important information on the moving directions of a CME or an interplanetary CME (ICME). This paper analyzes the moving directions of ICMEs, using the intensity-time profiles of 3 typical solar energetic particle events, and the statistical results are presented.

Can multiple shocks trigger ground level events?
A total of 16 Ground Level Events (GLE) occurred in solar cycle 23. These events, in which particle energies reach above 1 GeV/nuc, are the most energetic examples of Gradual Solar Energetic Particle (SEP) events. Over the past solar cycle, a great deal has been learned about these events observationally. However, the process by which particles are accelerated to these high energies is still pr...
متن کاملPropagation of Solar Energetic Particles in Three-dimensional Interplanetary Magnetic Fields
This paper presents a model calculation of solar energetic particle propagation in a three-dimensional interplanetary magnetic field. The model includes essentially all the particle transport mechanisms: streaming along magnetic field lines, convection with the solar wind, pitch-angle diffusion, focusing by the inhomogeneous interplanetary magnetic field, perpendicular diffusion, and pitch-angl...
متن کاملInitial Time Dependence of Abundances in Solar Energetic Particle Events.
We compare the initial behavior of Fe/O and He/H abundance ratios and their relationship to the evolution of the proton energy spectra in "small" and "large" gradual solar energetic particle (SEP) events. The results are qualitatively consistent with the behavior predicted by the theory of Ng et al. published in 1999. He/H ratios that initially rise with time are a signature of scattering by no...
متن کاملDeflections of Fast Coronal Mass Ejections and the Properties of Associated Solar Energetic Particle Events (postprint)
The onset times and peak intensities of solar energetic particle (SEP) events at Earth have long been thought to be influenced by the open magnetic fields of coronal holes (CHs). The original idea was that a CH lying between the solar SEP source region and the magnetic footpoint of the 1 AU observer would result in a delay in onset and/or a decrease in the peak intensity of that SEP event. Rece...
متن کاملHigh Energy Ionic Charge State Composition In Recent Large Solar Energetic Particle Events
The ionic charge states of solar energetic particles (SEPs) provide information on the temperature of source materials and on conditions during acceleration and transport. SAMPEX/MAST measures mean ionic charge states at > 15 MeV/nuc using the geomagnetic rigidity filter technique. Charge state measurements by MAST for gradual SEP events suggest a continuum of charge states correlated with abun...
