Bulge and Halo Kinematics across the Hubble Sequence

چکیده

The correlation between the maximum rotational velocity of the disk (υm) and the central stellar velocity dispersion of the bulge (σ0) offers insights into the relationship between the halo and the bulge. We have assembled integrated H I line widths and central stellar velocity dispersions to study the υm–σ0 relation for 792 galaxies spanning a broad range of Hubble types. Contrary to earlier studies based on much smaller samples, we find that the υm–σ0 relation exhibits significant intrinsic scatter and that its zeropoint varies systematically with galaxy morphology, bulge-to-disk ratio, and light concentration, as expected from basic dynamical considerations. Nucleated but bulgeless late-type spiral galaxies depart significantly from the υm–σ0 relation. While these results render questionable any attempt to supplant the bulge with the halo as the fundamental determinant of the central black hole mass in galaxies, the observed distribution of υm/σ0, which depends on both the density profile and kinematic structure of the galaxy, offers a useful constraint on galaxy formation models. With the aid of a near-infrared Tully-Fisher relation, we identify a population of otherwise normal, luminous galaxies that have exceptionally low values of υm/σ0. We argue that a significant fraction of the H I gas in these kinematically anomalous objects is dynamically unrelaxed, having been acquired externally either through capture from tidal interactions or through cold accretion from the intergalactic medium. Star Counts from Hst: Implications for Dark Matter

Star counts made with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) probe four populations that are important for dark matter: disk, halo, bulge, and intergalactic. The disk mass function falls for masses M < 0.6 M⊙ in sharp contrast to the rising Salpeter function usually assumed. The amount of “observed” disk material is therefore lower than commonly believed which implies the need for disk dark matter. H...

The Influence of Triaxial Halos on Collisionless Galactic Disks

We investigate the effect of rotating, triaxial halos on disk galaxies through an extensive set of numerical N -body simulations. Our simulations use a rigid potential field for the halos and bulges and collisionless particles for the disks. The triaxiality and the rotation rate of the halo are varied, as well as the masses of all three galaxy components. We analyze both the bar stability and t...

Inside-Out Bulge Formation and the Origin of the Hubble Sequence

Galactic disks are thought to originate from the cooling of baryonic material inside virialized dark halos. In order for these disks to have scalelengths comparable to observed galaxies, the specific angular momentum of the baryons has to be largely conserved. Because of the spread in angular momenta of dark halos, a significant fraction of disks are expected to be too small for them to be stab...

We present evidence for the existence of an old stellar halo in the dwarf irregular galaxy WLM, an isolated member of the Local Group. The halo consists of population-II stars, with low metallicities and age ≥ 10yr. The finding of a halo in a dwarf irregular galaxy argues for a generic mode of galaxy formation that requires a halo in the presence of a disk, regardless of galaxy size. This impli...

The Formation of the Hubble Sequence of Disk Galaxies: The Effects of Early Viscous Evolution

We investigate a model of disk galaxies whereby viscous evolution of the gaseous disk drives material inwards to form a proto-bulge. We start from the standard picture of disk formation through the settling of gas into a dark halo potential well, with the disk initially coming into centrifugal equilibrium with detailed conservation of angular momentum. We derive generic analytic solutions for t...
