Towards a Design Theory for Virtual Worlds: Algebraic semiotics, with information visualization as a case study

چکیده

We lack scientiic theories that can support the design of virtual worlds, which we construe in a broad way to include graphics-and text-based systems, as well as user interfaces of all kinds. Semiotics would seem a natural choice, but it (1) lacks mathematical precision, (2) considers single signs (e.g., a novel or a lm), not systems of signs, and (3) doesn't address interaction, or (4) social issues, such as arise in collaboration. Algebraic semiotics provides precise definitions for sign systems and representations, as well as a notion of representation quality and a calculus of representation. We also discuss some case studies, including information visualization, browsable proof displays, natural language metaphor, blending, and humor.

Information Visualization and Semiotic Morphisms

Information visualization design is generally ad hoc, using trial and error, and perhaps drawing on experience with prior visualization systems. This paper suggests a di erent approach: general design principles based on a combination of algebraic abstract data type theory, semiotics, and social theory. Major concepts include semiotic spaces to describe systems of related signs, semiotic morphi...

Semiotics of Collective Memory of the Iran-Iraq War (Holy Defence): A Case Study of the Shared Images in Virtual Social Networks

This study aims to achieve a semiotic understanding of collective memory of the Iran-Iraq war. For this purpose, samples of images in virtual social networks shared in response to the news of discovery and return of the bodies of more than 175 divers have been analyzed. Visual signs in photographs, cartoons, graphic designs, prints, paintings and posters, in methods of historical pictures and f...

Social diffusion patterns in three-dimensional virtual worlds

Received: 6 August 2003 Revised: 3 September 2003 Accepted: 12 September 2003 Abstract This paper presents a visualization tool set that can be used to visualize the evolution of three-dimensional (3D) virtual environments, the distribution of their virtual inhabitants over time and space, the formation and diffusion of groups, the influence of group leaders, and the environmental and social in...

Space/Place Reconsidered

This paper focuses on conceptions of space and media, and how we often conceive of space as a medium that stands as an absolute, above or apart from other media. It is this usually implicit assumption that lets us talk of virtual 'worlds' and of working or even living in an information 'space'. I'd like to present an opposing view, which treats space as merely one medium among the many used in ...
