چکیده

Article history: Received 5 August 2011 Received in revised form 31 August 2011 Accepted 7 September 2011 Available online 22 September 2011 The ‘monopoly face’ of unions suggests that the rent-seeking activities of unions discourage research and development investment and that the collective bargaining rules may restrict management flexibility, thus deterring innovations. On the other hand, the arrival of unions in the workplace may ‘shock’ the management into adopting more systematic rather than ad hoc management practices and that such innovative workplace practices may enhance an organization's ability to introduce new products and/or new processes. Further, the ‘voice face’ of unions argues that the independent ‘questioning’ of the management deliberations by the unions can also lead to better, more creative and, hence, more productive solutions. This paper investigates the link between unions and firm innovations in China. Different from their counterparts in advanced economies, Chinese unions are found to encourage firm innovations and R&D investment. © 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. Objective(s):The objective of this study was to investigate the interaction of daunorubicin (DNR) and cardiac myosin (CM) and the changes in mice hearts to exhibit DNR-induced cardiotoxicity . Materials and Methods:The interaction between DNR and CM was expressed using fluorescence quenching at pH 4.0-9.0 and 15-37 °C. DNR-induced cardiotoxicity was studied using in vivo experiment.  Forty grou...

0 Structural Recombination and Innovation : Unlocking Internal Knowledge Synergy through Structural Change

This paper examines how structural recombination of business units within a firm impacts subsequent firm innovation. We argue that structural recombination is a means for firms to unlock the potential for internal knowledge recombination, redrawing the firm’s internal boundaries to bring together complementary knowledge resources. Structural recombination may thus be beneficial to subsequent fi...

Do Unions Affect Innovation?

We examine the causal effect of unionization on firm innovation, using regression discontinuity design that relies on “locally” exogenous variation generated by elections that pass or fail by a small margin of votes. Passing a union election leads to an 8.7% (12.5%) decline in patent quantity (quality) three years post-election. A reduction in R&D expenditures, reduced productivity of inventors...

To address this issue, we investigate a configuration approach with the prevailing universalistic or contingency perspectives in exploring the effects of service innovation strategies on firm performance. Based on a service-oriented view, we begin by identifying three service innovation ...

Firm-level Human Capital and Innovation: Evidence from China

This paper explores firm-level innovation in a human capital view using two firm-level datasets from China, one from metropolitan cities and one from provincial middle cities. General human capital level can affect innovation directly and via R&D level indirectly; managerial human capital can affect firm innovation through their decision-making. We find that general human capital and managerial...
