Influence of Light Polarization on Reorientational Nonlinearity in Nematic Liquid Crystals

چکیده
Nematic liquid crystals are characterized by a giant optical nonlinearity which has its origin in the molecular reorientational phenomenon. Uniqueness of this nonlinear mechanism causes that response of the medium is dependent on many conditions. Among various of circumstances, both an initial alignment of liquid crystal cell and geometry of the system is very important, but in this paper a significant role of light polarization in nonlinear effects observed in nematics is emphasized. Additionally, it is underlined that dependence on light polarization does not have only trivial aspect of initial conditions. More complex seems to be fact that due to the high optical anisotropy of the medium the state of light polarization is being changing on the way of beam propagation. As a consequence, the modifications of molecular orientation in the liquid crystal cell are strongly dependent upon light polarization. PACS numbers: 42.65.-k, 42.70.Df

Spatial Solitons in Liquid Crystals
Reorientational phenomenon in liquid crystals is unique for nonlinear optics applications. Recently there have been shown that the reorientational nonlinearity in nematic liquid crystals can govern spatial solitons in both waveguide and bulk geometry. Such solitons require a few milliwats of light power and they can be controlled by the state of light polarisation or an external electric field....

Nematic liquid crystals are excellent medium for nonlinear optics, both in three-dimensional bulk systems [1-2] as well as in waveguide structures [3-4]. The main contribution to nonlinear optical phenomena in liquid crystals arises from thermal and reorientational processes. While the thermal effect is similar to that observed in other materials, the reorientational effect is characteristic on...

Optical reorientational nonlinearity in twisted nematic liquid crystalline planar waveguide is analyzed theoretically. It is shown that optical nonlinearity for guided modes in analyzed waveguides can be approximated by saturation nonlinearity. Predicted nonlinearity is large enough to observe e¤ects like spatial solitons formation with milliwatts of light power. PACS: 42.65.Wi, 42.70.Df
متن کاملAnomalous intensity dependence of optical reorientation in azo-dye-doped nematic liquid crystals.
The intensity dependence of optical nonlinearity in a nematic liquid crystal doped with an azo-dye is investigated. The reorientational part of the nonlinearity changes from self-defocusing to self-focusing character while the intensity passes through the saturation value of trans-cis photoisomerization. This observation, in accordance with previous models, indicates that the optical torque gen...
