Agents, pheromones, and mean-field models

چکیده
Some agent-based models use digital analogs of insect pheromones for coordination. We clarify the position of this family of techniques in the spectrum of modeling tools. Inspired by statistical physics, we consider the nature of “mean-field models.” We show by analysis and simulation that pheromone models are intermediate between classical agent-based models and mean-field models. This position is not fixed, but can be adjusted by pheromone parameters (notably, the propagation factor). We discuss implications for the design of agent-based models.

As in statistical physics, a model (EBM or ABM) that replaces individual interactions with system-level averages is a mean-field model (MFM). MFMs accept an unrealistic assumption of independence among key variables for improved tractability. In both physics and multi-agent systems, MFMs have limited accuracy [4, 5], but often give more concise insight than discrete models, and researchers ofte...

متن کاملEffect of pheromones on the plasma level of prolactin during pregnancy and lactating periods in female rat
Introduction: Pheromones play a great role in the reproductive and social behavior of animals. The main sources of pheromones are urine and paracrine secretions. Through the neuroendocrine system, prolactin is a safe parameter to measure and compare the effects of pheromones on the sexual, maternal and also lactating behavior. Methods: Female rats were divided into 19 groups (n=8). To measur...

Background & Aims: Neurogenesis in the adult mammal brain occurs throughout life. Adult neurogenesis has been clearly demonstrated in the sub granular zone (SGZ) of the dentate gyrus (DG) in the hippocampus. Pheromones that plays an essential role in the development of the central nervous system. The male pheromones are involved in regulating neurogenesis in both the olfactory bulb and hippocam...
متن کاملReproductive enhancement in buffalo: looking at urinary pheromones and hormones
The success of conception in buffalo is greatly dependent on precise estrus detection and time of artificial insemination (AI). Various visual, behavioral, biochemical and gyneco-clinical parameters have been tracked closely and a cost-effective combinatorial model has been developed to detect estrus in buffaloes. Pheromones play pivotal roles in reproduction and behavior of mammals. Urine, an ...
