Creating Rapport with Virtual Agents

چکیده
Recent research has established the potential for virtual characters to establish rapport with humans through simple contingent nonverbal behaviors. We hypothesized that the contingency, not just the frequency of positive feedback is crucial when it comes to creating rapport. The primary goal in this study was evaluative: can an agent generate behavior that engenders feelings of rapport in human speakers and how does this compare to human generated feedback? A secondary goal was to answer the question: Is contingency (as opposed to frequency) of agent feedback crucial when it comes to creating feelings of rapport? Results suggest that contingency matters when it comes to creating rapport and that agent generated behavior was as good as human listeners in creating rapport. A “virtual human listener” condition performed worse than other conditions.

Virtual Rapport 2.0
Rapport, the feeling of being "in sync" with your conversational partners, is argued to underlie many desirable social effects. By generating proper verbal and nonverbal behaviors, virtual humans have been seen to create rapport during interactions with human users. In this paper, we introduce our approach to creating rapport following Tickle-Degnen and Rosenberg’s threefactor (positivity, mutu...

Effective face-to-face conversations are highly interactive. Participants respond to each other, engaging in nonconscious behavioral mimicry and backchanneling feedback. Such behaviors produce a subjective sense of rapport and are correlated with effective communication, greater liking and trust, and greater influence between participants. Creating rapport requires a tight senseact loop that ha...

We investigate the effect of relational dialogue on creating rapport and exerting social influence in human-robot conversation, by comparing interactions with and without a relational component, and with different agent types. Human participants interact with two agents – a Nao robot and a virtual human – in four dialogue scenarios: one involving building familiarity, and three involving sharin...
متن کاملTowards a Computational Architecture of Dyadic Rapport Management for Virtual Agents
Rapport has been identified as an important factor in human task performance. Motivated by the proliferation of virtual agents that assist humans on various tasks, we propose a computational architecture for virtual agents, building on our own work on a dyadic model of rapport between humans and virtual agents. We show how such a system can be trained in order to build, maintain and destroy rap...
متن کاملCan Virtual Human Build Rapport and Promote Learning?
Research show that teacher’s nonverbal immediacy can have a positive impact on student’s cognitive learning and affect [31]. This paper investigates the effectiveness of nonverbal immediacy using a virtual human. The virtual human attempts to use immediacy feedback to create rapport with the learner. Results show that the virtual human established rapport with learners but did not help them ach...
