چکیده

Startle modification is a robust phenomenon that has been used as a tool in the research of emotion and motivation. In a picture viewing paradigm, valence of affective pictures modulates startle magnitude. There is a debate on whether emotional or attentional processes are the mechanism of startle modification. The present study sought to address this question by investigating the individual differences related to startle modification and explore the relationship of the trait-like physiological variables and startle modification. The study creatively calculated standardized startle scores and treated personality variables as continuous variable. The results showed that specific contents of the affective pictures had different effects of startle modification. Personality variables influence the startle modification in emotion conditions differently. Cardiac activities were related to raw startle magnitude but not to startle modification. The results have suggested that there are the influences of individual differences in attention and effortful control on startle modification and attention and that emotion and attention interact with each other in startle modification. The study filled gaps in the research on startle modification and personality and guided future studies of this topic. PERSONALITY AND STARTLE MODIFICATION iii

T-type Ca2+ channels in thalamic sensory gating and affective Disorders

Low threshold Ca2+ currents mediated by T-type channels underlie burst spike activities of relay neurons in the thalamus. We have previously reported that knock-out mice for T-type channels show an enhanced nociceptive response to visceral pain, accompanied by an increase in tonic spikes in the absence of burst spikes in thalamic relay neurons. These results raised a possibility that T-type cha...

Biological aspects of personality have an important influence on people psychological dimensions. People affective and mood states can be changed based on cycle of Hostelry. The aim of the present study was to investigate negative/positive affect levels and reinforcement sensitivity based on the change in the circadian cycle morningness and eveningness. First, 600 students (316 girls, 284 boys)...

Asymmetrical frontal ERPs, emotion, and behavioral approach/inhibition sensitivity.

The present study sought to extend past research on frontal brain asymmetry and individual differences by examining relationships of individual differences in behavioral inhibition/approach system (BIS/BAS) sensitivity with asymmetrical frontal event-related brain responses to startle probes presented during viewing of affective pictures. One hundred and ten participants were shown unpleasant, ...

Trait emotion and startle eyeblink 1 Running head: TRAIT ANGER AND THE STARTLE EYEBLINK RESPONSE Trait Emotions and Affective Modulation of the Startle Eyeblink: On the Unique Relationship of Trait Anger

We examined relationships among individual differences in trait emotions and the emotionmodulated startle-eyeblink response. In particular, we examined the extent to which trait anger, which is negative in valence, would be associated with a pattern of approach motivation in startle eyeblink responses to appetitive stimuli. Self-reported trait emotions were compared with emotion-modulated start...
