Suzaku X-ray Study of an Anomalous Source Xss J12270–4859

چکیده
We report the results of the Suzaku X-ray observation of XSS J12270–4859, one of the hard X-ray sources in the INTEGRAL catalogue. The object has been classified as an intermediate polar (IP) by optical spectra and a putative X-ray period of ∼860 s. With a 30 ks exposure of Suzaku, we obtained a well-exposed spectrum in the 0.2–70 keV band. We conclude against the previous IP classification based on the lack of Fe Kα emission features in the spectrum and the failure to confirm the previously reported X-ray period. Instead, the X-ray light curve is filled with exotic phenomena, including repetitive flares lasting ∼100 s, occasional dips with no apparent periodicities, spectral hardening after some flares, and bimodal changes pivoting between quiet and active phases. The rapid flux changes, the dips, and the power-law spectrum point toward the interpretation that this is a low-mass X-ray binary. Some temporal characteristics are similar to those in the Rapid Burster and GROJ1744–28, making XSS J12270–4859 a very rare object.

RXTE determination of the intermediate polar status of XSS J00564+4548, IGR J17195--4100, and XSS J12270--4859
Aims. We determine the nature of the intermediate polar candidates XSS J00564+4548, IGR J17195–4100, and XSS J12270–4859. Methods. Pointed RXTE observations searched for intermediate polar characteristics in these candidate systems. Results. XSS J00564+4548 exhibits a period of 465.68 ± 0.07 s, which we interpret as the spin period, an energy dependent modulation depth, and a spectrum that is f...
متن کاملA state change in the low - mass X - ray binary XSS J 12270 − 4859
Millisecond radio pulsars acquire their rapid rotation rates through mass and angular momentum transfer in a low-mass X-ray binary system. Recent studies of PSR J1824−2452I and PSR J1023+0038 have observationally demonstrated this link, and they have also shown that such systems can repeatedly transition back-and-forth between the radio millisecond pulsar and low-mass X-ray binary states. This ...

متن کاملMulti-wavelength observations of the transitional millisecond pulsar binary XSSJ12270-4859
We present an analysis of X-ray, Ultraviolet and optical/near-IR photometric data of the transitional millisecond pulsar binary XSS J12270-4859, obtained at different epochs after the transition to a rotation-powered radio pulsar state. The observations, while confirming the large-amplitude orbital modulation found in previous studies after the state change, also reveal an energy dependence of ...
متن کاملA Hard X-ray Power-law Spectral Cutoff in Centaurus X-4
The low-mass X-ray binary Cen X-4 is the brightest and closest (<1.2 kpc) quiescent neutron star transient. Previous 0.5–10 keV X-ray observations of Cen X-4 in quiescence identified two spectral components: soft thermal emission from the neutron star atmosphere and a hard power-law tail of unknown origin. We report here on a simultaneous observation of Cen X-4 with NuSTAR (3–79 keV) and XMM-Ne...
