چکیده

Heat treatment and stress state effects on the martensitic transformation in [001] and [123] oriented single crystal Ni54Fe19Ga27 alloys are determined. Characteristic temperatures increase for longer aging times and higher hold temperatures. The non-aged [001] crystals exhibit the smallest stress hysteresis and lowest critical stress in tension. The experimental results are interpreted based on the role of ordering and the second phase on changes in transformation temperatures and hysteresis. 2005 Acta Materialia Inc. Constitutive Model of Shape Memory Alloys for Asymmetric Quasiplastic Behavior

A simple constitutive model of shape memory alloys for analyses of tension–compression quasiplastic behavior is derived. Here, three martensitic variants are considered; namely, thermal-induced, tensile stress-induced, and compressive stress-induced martensitic variants. Reorientation from one variant to another variant is assumed to take place according to a reorientation energy criterion base...

Inter-martensitic transitions in Ni–Fe–Ga single crystals

The strain–temperature response of Ni–Fe–Ga single crystals underscores the role of the inter-martensitic transformation in creating intersecting heating and cooling segments; the separation of these segments occurs due to irreversibilities at high stresses and at high temperatures. An ultra-narrow tensile (1 C) and compressive (<10 C) thermal hysteresis are observed for the A 10M 14M case, acc...

Experimental Study on the Magnetomechanical Characteristics of Ni-Mn-Ga Ferromagnetic Shape Memory Alloy Single Crystals

Magnetic shape memory properties of Ni-Mn-Ga single crystals were characterized by measurement of stress-induced martensite reorientation under constant magnetic fields. Also magnetic field-induced strain as a function of the applied magnetic field under different constant compressive stress levels has been investigated. All the experiments were performed at room temperature in which the sample...

Stability of pressure-dependent, thermally-induced displacive transformations in bi-atomic crystals

An important property of some metallic alloys, such as NiTi, for technological applications is their coupled thermomechanical shape memory behavior. This is due to temperature-dependent first-order displacive (martensitic) transformations in which their crystal structures transform between a higher symmetry cubic phase and lower symmetry phases (rhombohedral, tetragonal, orthorhombic, or monocl...

On the mechanical behavior of single crystal NiTi shape memory alloys and related polycrystalline phenomenon

Room temperature monotonic and cyclic stress–strain curves for single crystal and polycrystalline NiTi shape memory alloys containing Ti3Ni4 precipitates are presented. The tensile and compressive single crystal results illustrate the importance of crystallographic texture, the unidirectional nature of the martensitic transformation, and martensite detwinning on tension-compression stress–strai...
