Charm Physics – like Botticelli in the Sistine Chapel
نویسنده
چکیده
After sketching heavy quark expansions as applied to heavy flavour decays I emphasize the relevance of nonperturbative dynamics at the charm scale for exclusive b → c modes. I address the issue of quark-hadron duality for charm and discuss both the experimental and theoretical status of D − D̄ oscillations. Finally I argue that comprehensive CP studies of charm decays provide novel portals to New Physics and suggest benchmark figures for desirable sensitivities.

Restoring a Legacy
In 1508, Pope Julius II commissioned Michelangelo Buonarroti to paint the ceiling of the Cappella Sistina (Sistine Chapel) in Rome. Michelangelo labored for five years, much of it while lying on his back, to complete the task. In 1538, he was called back by Pope Paul III to add an enhancement, The Last Judgment, over the alter. This took seven more years. Michelangelo’s work on the Sistine Chap...

متن کاملAn Approach to Maintaining Viewer Perspective in Interactive Virtual Tours
While virtual tours have been around for some time, the ability to get a true sense of the location has not been adequately developed. As part of a partnership between our department and the Vatican, we have created a virtual tour of the Sistine Chapel using multiple locations and interactive menus to allow users to feel as though they are actually there. Not only does the virtual tour give use...

There are many things in this world that are simply amazing. Some of these things are crafted by nature, such as the mighty Grand Canyon, the luscious rain forests of the tropics, and even a tiny flower on a high mountain top trying to send its roots down through cracks in the rock. Some things are also manmade, the Great Pyramids of Egypt, the Taj Mahal, and the Sistine Chapel all come to mind...

This is of course impossible, but Gould’s thought experiment is a useful conceptual exercise which brings out key issues of determinism versus randomness in history. More broadly, it can be illuminating to ponder all kinds of implausible and radical scenarios, in effect bracketing the real world with visions of possible worlds. What would our world now be like if, at some time in the past, a ma...
