چکیده

Current interest in the influence exerted by the brain stem reticular formation upon somatomotor and autonomic functions has resulted in the publication of numerous papers. As far as autonomic functions are concerned, however, only a few attempts have been made to investigate the mechanism whereby the observed actions of this integrative center are effected. Recently,it has been demonstrated by WANG and BROWN(1956)that the galvanic skin reflex(the GSR)of the cat is a suitable indicator for studying central inhibition of autonomic reflex, and that stimulation of the bulbar ventromedial reticular formation causes inhibition of the GSR. In the present study, therefore,an attempt has been made to analyze inhibitory effect of the bulbar reticular formation upon the sudomotor activity, in order to gain some understanding of the mechanisms of reticular inhibition of the autonomic founctions. The previous study(WANG and BROWN,1956) has dealt mainly with the GSR evoked by stimulation of the peripheral sensory nerve. The present paper differs from it in the point that changes in the level of skin potential resultant from brain stimulation were also investigated together with changes in the amplitude of the GSR.

An inhibitory mechanism in the bulbar reticular formation.

ACCORDING to the doctrine that the nervous system is organized as a series of levels, that portion of the brain stem lying immediately above the spinal cord, and described as bulbar, has traditionally been regarded as a level contributing excitatory influences to motor outflows. The basis for this view is the observation, f&t made by Sherrington (ll), that decerebration leaving only the bulbar ...

Effects of Chlorpromazine on Some Motor Reflexes*~-

-The effects of chlorpromazine (CPZ) on the patellar reflex and segmentally evoked spinal cord potentials were determined in various cat preparations. CPZ in doses of I-8 mg/kg given intravenously (as an accumulative dose) produced a signiticant depression of the patellar reflex and segmentally evoked potentials in animals with an intact central nervous system. Hypotension, potentiation of anes...

Chapter 7 . 1 Sympathetic skin response

The sympathetic skin response (SSR) is a change in skin potential following arousal stimulation, ®rst described by Tarchanoff (1890). SSR is a polysynaptic re ̄ex that is activated by a variety of afferent inputs. The ®nal efferent pathway involves preand postganglionic sympathetic sudomotor ®bers and ultimately activation of sweat glands by the sympathetic out ̄ow. The re ̄ex is coordinated in th...

Neuronal organization of the central respiratory mechanisms in the brain stem of the cat.

In order to obtain basic evidence on the neuronal organization and localization of the central respiratory mechanism in the brain stem of the cat, the following experiments were undertaken: reexamination of the physiological meaning of apneusis and the gasp; differences in stability of spontaneous burst activity of respiratory neurons in the brain stem reticular formation; changes of spontaneou...

The spino-bulbar-cerebellar pathway: organization and neurochemical properties of spinal cells that project to the lateral reticular nucleus in the rat

In addition to classical spinocerebellar pathways, the cerebellum receives information from the spinal cord indirectly via spino-bulbar-cerebellar systems. One of the structures in this pathway is the lateral reticular nucleus (LRt). We performed series of experiments to investigate the organization and neurotransmitter content of spinoreticular tract (SRT) neurons in the lumbar spinal cord tha...
