چکیده

Linac beams in the Stanford Linear Collider (SLC) were driven into oscillation by transverse vibration of lattice quadrupoles at about 7 Hz. These quadrupoles are centered on 12-meter support girders located early in the linac. The vibrations were caused by ground motion at the 0.06 l.tm level which was amplified in the accelerator supports up to 5 pm. Seismic and support vibration measurements were Fourier analyzed and a strong correlation with beam observations was observed. Subsequent modifications of the supports have eliminated these oscillations.

Beam Determination of Quadrupole Misalignments and Beam Position Monitor Biases in the Slc Linac’

Misalignments of magnetic quadrupoles and biases in beam position monitors (BPMs) in the Stanford Linear Collider (SLC) linac can lead to a situation in which the beam is off-center in the-disk-loaded waveguide accelerator structure. The off-center beam produces wakefields which can limit SLC performance by causing unacceptably large emittance growth. We present a general method for determining...

THE INTRODUCIION OF TRAJECTGRY OSCILLATlONS TO REDUCE EMITTANCE GROWTH IN THE SLC LINAC*

Emittance growth of accelerated beams in the 50 GeV linear accelerator of the Stanford Linear Collider (SLC) arises from the effects of transverse wakefields and momentum dispersion. These effects are caused by small misalignments of the beam position monitors, lattice quadrupoles, and accelerating structure and by the energy specnum of the beam which changes along the accelerator. The introduc...

Observation and Control of Emittance Growth in the Slc Linac*

To produce high luminosity at a linear collider, the impinging beams must be focused to extremely small spots, thus requiring low beam emittances. At the SLAC Linear Collider (SLC), low emittance beams are provided by the damping rings, then accelerated in the linac. The linac cannot be allowed to cause significant emittance growth. We describe here the observed emittance of the beam at its lau...

Detection of Beam Induced Dipole-Mode Signals in the SLC S-Band Structures*

Beam emittance dilution caused by wakefield effects is one of the important issues in the SLC linac. The detection of beam induced dipole mode signals in the C.. band range could provide a direct measure of the strength of transverse wakefield kicks the beam experiences in the accelerating structures. We investigate the applicability of these microwave signals for beam steering purposes. The RF...

Quadrupole Alignment and Trajectory Correc- Tion for Future Linear Colliders: Slc Tests of a Dispersion-free Steering Algorithm

The feasibility of future linear colliders depends on achieving very tight alignment and steering tolerances. All proposals (NLC, JLC, CLIC, TESLA and S-BAND) currently require a total emittance growth in the main linac of less than 30-100% [1]. This should be compared with a 100% emittance growth in the much smaller SLC linac [2]. Major advances in alignment and beam steering techniques beyond...
