چکیده

The division of galaxies into " barred " (SB) and " normal " (S) spirals is a fundamental aspect of the Hubble galaxy classification system. This " tuning fork " view was revised by de Vaucouleurs, whose classification volume recognized apparent " bar strength " (SA, SAB, SB) as a continuous property of galaxies called the " family ". However, the SA, SAB, and SB families are purely visual judgments that can have little bearing on the actual bar strength in a given galaxy. Until very recently, published bar judgments were based exclusively on blue light images, where internal extinction or star formation can either mask a bar completely or give the false impression of a bar in a nonbarred galaxy. Near-infrared camera arrays, which principally trace the old stellar population in both normal and barred galaxies, now facilitate a quantification of bar strength in terms of their gravitational potentials and force fields. In this paper, we show that the maximum value, Q b , of the ratio of the tangential force to the mean axisymmetric radial force in a barred disk galaxy is a quantitative measure of the strength of a bar. Q b does not measure bar ellipticity or bar shape, but rather depends on the actual forcing due to the bar embedded in its disk. We show that a wide range of true bar strengths characterizes the category " SB " , while de Vaucouleurs category " SAB " corresponds to a much narrower range of bar strengths. We present Q b values for 36 galaxies, and we incorporate our bar classes into a dust-penetrated classification system for spiral galaxies.

A&a Manuscript No. Astronomy and Astrophysics toward a Dust Penetrated Classiication of the Evolved Stellar Population Ii Disks of Galaxies

To derive a coherent physical framework for the excitation of spiral structure in galaxies, one must consider the coexistence of two diierent dynamical components: a gas-dominated Population I disk (OB associations , HII regions, cold interstellar HI gas) and an evolved stellar Population II component. The Hubble classiication scheme has as its focus, the morphology of the Population I componen...

Images from the Hubble Deep Field (HDF) North and South show a large percentage of dusty, high redshift galaxies whose appearance falls outside traditional classification systems. The nature of these objects is not yet fully understood. Since the HDF preferentially samples restframe UV light, HDF morphologies are not dust or 'mask' penetrated. The appearance of high redshift galaxies at near-in...

Off-equatorial orbits in strong gravitational fields near compact objects

Near a black hole or an ultracompact star, motion of particles is governed by strong gravitational field. Electrically charged particles feel also electromagnetic force arising due to currents inside the star or plasma circling around. We study a possibility that the interplay between gravitational and electromagnetic action may allow for stable, energetically bound off-equatorial motion of cha...

Nested Bars and Associated Morphology of Central Kpc in Disk Galaxies

We discuss different aspects of nested bar systems, both observational and theoretical. Such systems consist of a large-scale primary bar leading to the formation of a sub-kpc size secondary bar, whose pattern speed differs substantially from that of the main bar. Specifically, we focus on the origin and gravitational decoupling of nested bars, and their characteristic gas flows on scales of ∼ ...
