Diagonalisation of covariance matrices in quaternion widely linear signal processing

چکیده
Recent developments in quaternion-valued widely linear processing have established that the exploitation of complete second-order statistics requires consideration of both the standard covariance and the three complementary covariance matrices. Although such matrices have a tremendous amount of structure and their decomposition is a powerful tool in a variety of applications, the noncommutative nature of the quaternion product has been prohibitive to the development of quaternion uncorrelating transforms. To this end, we introduce novel techniques for a simultaneous decomposition of the covariance and complementary covariance matrices in the quaternion domain, whereby the quaternion version of the Takagi factorisation is explored to diagonalise symmetric quaternion-valued matrices. This gives new insights into the quaternion uncorrelating transform (QUT) and forms a basis for the proposed quaternion approximate uncorrelating transform (QAUT) which simultaneously diagonalises all four covariance matrices associated with improper quaternion signals. The effectiveness of the proposed uncorrelating transforms is validated by simulations on both synthetic and real-world quaternion-valued signals. ∗Corresponding author Email address: [email protected] (Min Xiang) Preprint submitted to Elsevier January 30, 2018

On the unitary diagonalisation of a special class of quaternion matrices
We propose a unitary diagonalisation of a special class of quaternion matrices, the socalled η-Hermitian matrices A = AηH , η ∈ {ı, ȷ, κ} arising in widely linear modelling. In 1915, Autonne exploited the symmetric structure of a matrix A = AT to propose its corresponding factorisation (also knownas the Takagi factorisation) in the complex domain C. Similarly, we address the factorisation of an...
متن کاملA brief introduction to quaternion matrices and linear algebra and on bounded groups of quaternion matrices
The division algebra of real quaternions, as the only noncommutative normed division real algebra up to isomorphism of normed algebras, is of great importance. In this note, first we present a brief introduction to quaternion matrices and quaternion linear algebra. This, among other things, will help us present the counterpart of a theorem of Herman Auerbach in the setting of quaternions. More ...
متن کاملSequential Matrix Diagonalisation Algorithms for Polynomial EVD of Parahermitian Matrices
For parahermitian polynomial matrices, which can be used, for example, to characterise space-time covariance in broadband array processing, the conventional eigenvalue decomposition (EVD) can be generalised to a polynomial matrix EVD (PEVD). In this paper, a new iterative PEVD algorithm based on sequential matrix diagonalisation (SMD) is introduced. At every step the SMD algorithm shifts the do...
متن کاملInvolution Matrices of Real Quaternions
An involution or anti-involution is a self-inverse linear mapping. In this paper, we will present two real quaternion matrices, one corresponding to a real quaternion involution and one corresponding to a real quaternion anti-involution. Moreover, properties and geometrical meanings of these matrices will be given as reflections in R^3.
متن کاملInverse Young inequality in quaternion matrices
Inverse Young inequality asserts that if $nu >1$, then $|zw|ge nu|z|^{frac{1}{nu}}+(1-nu)|w|^{frac{1}{1-nu}}$, for all complex numbers $z$ and $w$, and equality holds if and only if $|z|^{frac{1}{nu}}=|w|^{frac{1}{1-nu}}$. In this paper the complex representation of quaternion matrices is applied to establish the inverse Young inequality for matrices of quaternions. Moreover, a necessary and ...
