چکیده

The first report of the use of ‘phototherapy’ in the treatment of skin disorders dates from 1400 BC from India when patients with vitiligo were given certain plant extracts (whose active ingredients included psoralens) and then exposed to the sun. The real interest in the use of ultraviolet (UV) irradiation in the treatment of various skin diseases started in the 19 century when Niels Finsen received the Nobel Prize (1903) for his therapeutic results with UV irradiation in lupus vulgaris, the only dermatologist ever to be awarded one. This marked the start of modern phototherapy. It was used in thermal stations for the treatment of tuberculosis, in the treatment of leg ulcers in wartime, and various other skin diseases. It was a very long journey from the use of plant extracts and sun exposure to treat vitiligo to the use of oral psoralens and total body UVA-irradiation cabins (PUVA) to treat various skin diseases. In a landmark development, in 1974 Parrish et al reported the useful role of high intensity UVA tubes in combination with oral psoralens in the treatment of psoriasis leading to what is now known as PUVA therapy.

Evaluation of narrow band UVB therapeutic effect on chronic mucocutaneous graft versus host disease lesions: A case series

Background: Chronic graft versus host disease (cGVHD) is a major cutaneous complication of bone marrow transplantation (BMT). Although milder forms of this process may be associated with a lower incidence of tumor recurrences, it is mandatory to develop a more efficient and less harmful therapeutic approach. Methods: This case-series study enrolled 7 patients diagnosed with chronic mucocutaneous...

Serum level of vitamin D3 in vitiligo patients before and after treatment with narrow band UVB. Is there an association with treatment?

Background: Vitiligo is a pigmentation disorder of the skin characterized by the loss of melanocytes through different mechanisms. Narrow band UVB (NBUVB) is a safe and effective treatment for vitiligo that acts by inducing the synthesis of cytokines involved in melanogenesis. NBUVB appears to be involved in the treatment of vitiligo by increasing the synthesis of vitamin D, which prevents the ...

تأثیر Narrow Band-UVB بر روی فلور نرمال ضایعات پوستی پسوریاتیک و پوست سالم در بیماران مبتلا به پسوریازیس

Background and Aim: Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory dermatosis that affects 0.6% to 4.8% of the general population. Our aim was to compare the effect of narrow band UVB (NB-UVB) on normal flora of cutaneous plaques and normal skin in psoriatic patients. Methods: Twenty psoriatic patients without any contraindication of phototherapy were enrolled in this study. Samples from psoriatic...

[New and established indications for phototherapy with narrowband UVB].

Phototherapy with ultraviolet (UV) irradiation of wavelengths between 280 and 320 nm (UV-B) is a safe and effective treatment for a variety of inflammatory skin diseases. In addition to standard broad band UVB, narrow band phototherapy with fluorescent bulbs emitting near monochromatic UV between 310-315 nm has become an important treatment for diseases such as psoriasis, atopic dermatitis or v...

Narrow-band UVB (TL-01) phototherapy: an effective preventative treatment for the photodermatoses.

Twenty patients with photodermatoses [actinic prurigo (n = 6), hydroa vacciniforme (n = 4), idiopathic solar urticaria (n = 1), amiodarone-induced photosensitivity (n = 1) and a range of cutaneous porphyrias (n = 8)] were treated with a 'hardening' course of narrow-band ultraviolet B (TL-01) phototherapy in springtime. The response to phototherapy was monitored subjectively, by interviewing pat...
