Histological differentiation of metastatic renal carcinoma in the cerebellum from cerebellar haemangioblastoma in von Hippel - Lindau ' s disease
نویسنده
چکیده
Two cases of von Hippel-Lindau's disease with special reference to the occurrence of renal carcinoma are presented. The first case demonstrates the difficulty of differentiating cerebellar haemangioblastoma from metastatic renal carcinoma affecting the cerebellum. The valuable differentiating histological features were positive staining of metastatic renal carcinoma by antiepithelial membrane antigen (anti-EMA) and the demonstration ofa distinct pattern ofpacketing of cells by staining reticulin fibres. Staining with periodic acid Schiffand cytokeratin antibody (anti-CK) were not found to be useful. The second case exhibits the wide variety of neoplasms which may be present in von Hippel-Lindau's disease. Special stains support the findings of the first case.

متن کاملStatistical analysis of the two stage mutation model in von Hippel-Lindau disease, and in sporadic cerebellar haemangioblastoma and renal cell carcinoma.
Analysis of the age incidence curves for unilateral and bilateral retinoblastoma led Knudson to propose that hereditary tumours may arise by a single event and sporadic tumours by a two stage mutation process. It has been suggested recently that sporadic renal cell carcinoma may arise from a two stage mutation process. We analysed the age incidence curves for symptomatic renal cell carcinoma (n...

A germline mutation in the Von-Hippel Lindau (VHL) gene predisposes carriers to development of abundantly vascularised tumours in the retina, cerebellum, spine, kidney, adrenal gland and pancreas. Most VHL patients die from the consequences of cerebellar haemangioblastoma or renal cell carcinoma. The VHL gene is a tumour suppressor gene and is involved in angiogenesis by regulation of the activ...
متن کاملVon Hippel-Lindau disease: delayed presentation as a cerebellar haemangioblastoma in an elderly patient.
Cerebellar haemangioblastomas are rare in the elderly. Those associated with the von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease, usually present during the third decade of life. We report an unusually delayed presentation in an 80 year old obligate carrier of VHL gene mutation.
متن کاملFamilial incidence of obstructive hydrocephalus due to posterior fossa tumours leading to the diagnosis of von Hippel-Lindau disease--a case report.
Von Hippel-Lindau disease (VHLD) is an autosomal dominant disorder predisposing to the development of different histological types of tumours with predominance of CNS haemangioblastomas in the majority of cases. We present a case of a 35-year-old man with obstructive hydrocephalus due to multiple posterior fossa tumours. Familial history revealed two relatives operated on previously because of ...
