MATLAB functions to analyze directional (azimuthal) data - I: Single-sample inference

نویسنده

  • Thomas A. Jones
چکیده

Data that represent azimuthal directions cannot be analyzed statistically in the same manner as ordinary variables that measure, for example, size or quality. Many statistical techniques have been developed for dealing with directional data, but available software for the unique calculations is scarce. This paper describes a MATLAB script, located on the IAMG server, that calculates descriptive statistics and performs inference on azimuthal parameters. The calculations include tests for specific distributions, and tests on the preferred direction and concentration of vectors about this direction. The inference methods use large-sample approximations, plus resampling methods (bootstrap) for smaller sample sizes. r 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

MATLAB functions to analyze directional (azimuthal) data - II: Correlation

Data that represent azimuthal directions cannot be analyzed in the same manner as ordinary linear variables that measure, for example, size or quality. This is especially true for correlations between variables. Although many statistical techniques have been developed for dealing with directional data, software is scarce for the unique calculations. This paper describes a MATLAB script, located...

Effect of Probiotics on Infantile Colic Using the Quadratic Inference Functions

Background: Infantile colic is defined as episodes of extreme and excessive crying due to unknown causes. Various results have been reported regarding the management of colic with probiotics in terms of effectiveness, with no side effects or health risks in the infants. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of probiotics on the infants with colic using the quadratic inference functions...

CircStat: A MATLAB Toolbox for Circular Statistics

Directional data is ubiquitious in science. Due to its circular nature such data cannot be analyzed with commonly used statistical techniques. Despite the rapid development of specialized methods for directional statistics over the last fifty years, there is only little software available that makes such methods easy to use for practioners. Most importantly, one of the most commonly used progra...

High Frequency Analysis of Single Overhead Line Terminated to Grounded Arrester

In this paper, intelligent models based on fuzzy inference are proposed to analyze single overhead line terminated to arrester. This paper consists of two parts. The first one is modeling overhead line and the second one is related to modeling grounding system. In each part, the behavior of the problem is first represented as simple and unchanged membership functions. After then, effects of par...

Bayes Estimation for a Simple Step-stress Model with Type-I Censored Data from the Geometric Distribution

This paper focuses on a Bayes inference model for a simple step-stress life test using Type-I censored sample in a discrete set-up. Assuming the failure times at each stress level are geometrically distributed, the Bayes estimation problem of the parameters of interest is investigated in the both of point and interval approaches. To derive the Bayesian point estimators, some various balanced lo...
