چکیده

This paper describes a superfluid analog of the superconducting RF SQUID.1 Whereas an RF SQUID is sensitive to magnetic flux, the 4He SQUID (Superfluid QUantum Interference Device) is sensitive to absolute rotation. The device described here exhibits several of the characteristic phenomena of SQUIDs. For example: There is a "staircase" response function. The slope of the staircase response is determined by the fluctuation phenomena underlying phase slips in a weak link. The device performance is sensitive to the uncontrolled motion of quantized vortices. Performance is adversely affected by the excitation of normal modes of the device. Fundamental fluctuations, thermal in this case, determine the noise floor of the device. The theory describing the 4He SQUID rests on the very foundation of the theory of superfluidity in 4He.2 The state of superfluid 4He is described by a macroscopic wave function whose phase, O, is proportional to the superfluid velocity potential:

Superfluid 4 He interferometer operating near 2 K

We report the observation of quantum interference in superfluid He. The interferometer, an analog of a dc-superconducting quantum interference device SQUID , employs a recently reported phenomenon wherein superfluid He exhibits Josephson frequency oscillations in an array of submicron apertures. An interference pattern is generated by reorienting the loop of the superfluid “SQUID” with respect ...

VISCOSITY COEFFICIENTS OF THE A-PHASE OF SUPERFLUID He AT LOW TEMPERATURES

It has been shown that the Boltzmann equation for the viscosity of the A-phase of superfluid 3He at low temperatures has the same form as for a normal Ferrni liquid. The viscosity coefficients A, B, C, D and E are derived exactly. The h , parameter plays an important role in determining the temperature dependence of the viscosity coefficients

Superfluid helium quantum interference devices (SHeQUIDs): principles and performance

We describe recent progress in developing a superfluid helium analog of the superconducting dc-SQUID. The devices tested thus far are sensitive detectors of rotation as well as useful probes for studies of superfluidity. The key ingredients of the superfluid helium quantum interference device (SHeQUID) involve commercially available technology and modest cryogenic facilities. The superfluid sta...

Simulation of a He Superfluid Gyrometer with Large Sensing Area

We present the numerical analysis of a Helmholtz resonator-based He analog of the rf-SQUID. This device has been demonstrated to act as a sensitive gyrometer. The rotation is detected by its effect on the apparent critical velocity of helium superflow through a small aperture. To increase the sensitivity, one must enlarge the sensing loops and use higher excitation frequencies. The behavior of ...

Energetics of an rf SQUID Coupled to Two Thermal Reservoirs

We study energetics of a Josephson tunnel junction connecting a superconducting loop pierced by an external magnetic flux (an rf SQUID) and coupled to two independent thermal reservoirs of different temperature. In the framework of the theory of quantum dissipative systems, we analyze energy currents in stationary states. The stationary energy flow can be periodically modulated by the external ...
