The stability of general intelligence from early adulthood to middle-age

چکیده
Early cross-sectional studies suggested that cognitive functions begin to decline in young adulthood, whereas the first longitudinal studies suggested that they are mainly stable in adulthood. A number of more contemporary longitudinal studies support the stability hypothesis. However, drop out effects have the consequence that most longitudinal studies end up with relatively few subjects. In the present study we determined absolute as well as differential stability in general intelligence g, and in verbal and arithmetic abilities, longitudinally for 4000+ adult male veterans drawn from the Vietnam Experience Study (VES). The subjects were given five cognitive tests in their early adulthood. Approximately 18 years later, 14 cognitive tests were administered. Two tests, one verbal and one arithmetic, were administered on both occasions. A Principal Axis Factor analysis was conducted separately on the tests from first and second testing in order to extract both a “gyoung” and a “gold” general intelligence factor. gyoung was then correlated with gold to determine the differential stability of g. The absolute scores from the recurrent tests were correlated to determine the differential stability and compared using an ordinary t-test in order to estimate the absolute stability. The differential stability coefficients were: 0.85 for g; 0.79 for arithmetic; and 0.82 for verbal ability. With respect to absolute stability of the specific tests, we found a significant increase in verbal score (mean scores; 107.16, 116.52), but no change in arithmetic score. Problems associated with different concepts of stability, level of analysis and potential practice effects were discussed. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Genes determine stability and the environment determines change in cognitive ability during 35 years of adulthood.
Previous research has demonstrated stability of cognitive ability and marked heritability during adulthood, but questions remain about the extent to which genetic factors account for this stability. We conducted a 35-year longitudinal assessment of general cognitive ability using the Armed Forces Qualification Test administered to 7,232 male twins in early adulthood and readministered to a subs...

AIMS To examine age-18 risk factors for alcohol use and heavy drinking during early (ages 22 and 26) and middle (age 35) adulthood, and for symptoms of alcohol use disorders (AUDs) in middle adulthood. DESIGN Nationally representative samples of US adolescents in their senior year of secondary school (age 18) were followed into middle adulthood. Structural equation models estimated the associ...
متن کاملIntelligence in early adulthood and subclinical atherosclerosis in middle-aged men: the Vietnam Experience Study.
BACKGROUND People with higher intelligence in early life have a lower subsequent risk of coronary heart disease events, but the explanation for these observations is unclear. AIMS To examine whether intelligence in early adulthood is associated with risk of subclinical atherosclerosis in mid-life, as indicated by the ankle brachial index (ABI), and investigate its potential mediating role in ...
متن کاملGenetic contributions to the association between height and intelligence: Evidence from Dutch twin data from childhood to middle age.
A positive association between intelligence (IQ) and height has been reported previously. It is generally assumed that this association reflects the effect of childhood environment on IQ, but there is still little research supporting directly this hypothesis. We studied the association between height and IQ in 209 Dutch twin pairs at the ages of 5, 7, 10 and 12 years, 208 twin pairs at 16 and 1...
متن کاملWeight-Related Teasing from Adolescence to Young Adulthood: Longitudinal and Secular Trends between 1999 and 2010
OBJECTIVE To examine longitudinal trends from 1999-2010 in weight-related teasing as adolescents transition to young adulthood and to examine secular trends in teasing among early and middle adolescents over the same time period. DESIGN AND METHODS To examine longitudinal changes we used data from 2,287 participants in Project EAT-III, an ongoing cohort that followed two age cohorts of adoles...
