Conditions for Stable Approximation Schemes Basic idea: Mimic structure of continuous problem. To establish stability of continuous problem, only used last two spaces in top sequence and last three spaces in bottom sequence. Λn−1(K) dn−1 −−−→ Λn(K)→ 0 ↗ Sn−2 ↗ Sn−1 Λn−2(V) dn−2 −−−→ Λn−1(V) dn−1 −−−→ Λn(V)→ 0. Thus, look for five finite dimensional spaces connected by a similar structure, i.e., in addition to spaces Λh(K) ⊂ HΛ n(K), Λn−1 h (V) ⊂ HΛ n−1(V), Λh(V) ⊂ HΛ n(V) used in finite element method, also seek spaces Λn−1 h (K) ⊂ HΛ n−1(K), Λn−2 h (V) ⊂ HΛ n−2(V). 59 Require finite element spaces also connected by exact sequences, but introduce additional flexibility by inserting L2 projection operator Πh and using approximations of Sn−2 and Sn−1. Λn−1 h (K) Πhdn−1 −−−−−→ Λh(K)→ 0 ↗ Sn−2,h ↗ Sn−1,h (7) Λn−2 h (V) dn−2 −−−→ Λn−1 h (V) dn−1 −−−→ Λh(V)→ 0. Next step: Identify properties of interpolants into each finite element space needed for stability proof. Define Πh and Π̃ n h to be L 2 projection operators into Λh(K) and Λh(V), respectively.

Differential Complexes and Stability of Finite Element Methods Ii: the Elasticity Complex

A close connection between the ordinary de Rham complex and a corresponding elasticity complex is utilized to derive new mixed finite element methods for linear elasticity. For a formulation with weakly imposed symmetry, this approach leads to methods which are simpler than those previously obtained. For example, we construct stable discretizations which use only piecewise linear elements to ap...

Nearly Incompressible Linear Elasticity Using Simplicial Meshes

We present two finite element methods for simplicial meshes to approximate the solution of the problem of nearly incompressible elasticity. Although both approaches are based on mixed formulations of linear elastic equations and biorthogonal systems, one of them is nonsymmetric, and the other symmetric. An interesting feature of both approaches is that displacement-based formulations can be obt...

Cover interpolation functions and h-enrichment in finite element method

This paper presents a method to improve the generation of meshes and the accuracy of numerical solutions of elasticity problems, in which two techniques of h-refinement and enrichment are used by interpolation cover functions. Initially, regions which possess desired accuracy are detected. Mesh improvment is done through h-refinement for the elements existing in those regions. Total error of th...

A New Eight Nodes Brick Finite Element Based on the Strain Approach

In this paper, a new three dimensional brick finite element based on the strain approach is presented with the purpose of identifying the most effective to analyze linear thick and thin plate bending problems. The developed element which has the three essential external degrees of freedom (U, V and W) at each of the eight corner nodes, is used with a modified elasticity matrix in order to satis...

Symmetric Matrix Fields in the Finite Element Method

The theory of elasticity is used to predict the response of a material body subject to applied forces. In the linear theory, where the displacement is small, the stress tensor which measures the internal forces is the variable of primal importance. However the symmetry of the stress tensor which expresses the conservation of angular momentum had been a challenge for finite element computations....

Mixed finite element methods for linear elasticity with weakly imposed symmetry

In this paper, we construct new finite element methods for the approximation of the equations of linear elasticity in three space dimensions that produce direct approximations to both stresses and displacements. The methods are based on a modified form of the Hellinger–Reissner variational principle that only weakly imposes the symmetry condition on the stresses. Although this approach has been...
