Descriptions of Scientific Revolutions: Rorty’s Failure at Redescribing Scientific Progress

چکیده

The twentieth century saw extended development in the philosophy of science to incorporate contemporary expansions of scientific theory and investigation. Richard Rorty was a prominent and rather controversial thinker who maintained that all progress, from social change to scientific inquiry, was achieved through the redescription of existing vocabularies. However, this theory fails to describe revolutionary scientific progress. Thomas Kuhn’s theories of paradigm change, as first described in his seminal work The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, better portray this process. I attempt to show this by applying Kuhn’s and Rorty’s views to examples of scientific progress and comparing the results. Richard Rorty was arguably one of the most controversial thinkers of the latter twentieth century. His embrace of neo-pragmatism inspired a renewed interest in the pragmatic tradition of the philosophical community at large and precipitated countless debates in contemporary philosophical studies. Among his many problematic claims is his assertion that any type of progress is achieved through redescription of previous vocabularies. I will argue that this theory has dangerous implications when applied to revolutionary scientific advance. Redescription ultimately fails to account for the change that occurs during such periods in scientific practice, and is ultimately disingenuous towards that progress. Thomas Kuhn’s theories, as they first appear in The Structure of Scientific Revolutions

Scientific revolutions, specialization and the discovery of the structure of DNA: toward a new picture of the development of the sciences

In his late years, Thomas Kuhn became interested in the process of scientific specialization, which does not seem to possess the destructive element that is characteristic of scientific revolutions. It therefore makes sense to investigate whether and how Kuhn’s insights about specialization are consistent with, and actually fit, his model of scientific progress through revolutions. In this pape...

Title: THOMAS KUHN'S THE STRUCTURE OF SCIENTIFIC REVOLUTIONS

In the preface to The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, Thomas Kuhn cites as unifying many of his studies a problem-structure and orientation including "the way in which the experimental bases of a new theory are accumulated and assimilated by men committed to an incompatible older theory" (SSR p.ix). (1) This phenomenon contributed greatly to the movement in Kuhn's career from physics, to h...

Kuhn's Structure of Scientific Revolutions

These remarks permit us at last to consider the problems that provide this essay with its title. What are scientific revolutions, and what is their function in scientific development? Much of the answer to these questions has been anticipated in earlier sections. In particular, the preceding discussion has indicated that scientific revolutions are here taken to be those non-cumulative developme...

The postmodern assault on science

The scientific method has been the guiding principle for investigating natural phenomena, but post modernist thought is starting to threaten the foundations of the scientific approach. The rational, scientific view of the world has been painstakingly built over millennia to guarantee that research can have access to objective reality: the world, for science, contains real objects and is governe...

Response to: Lessons from Popper for science, paradigm shifts, scientific revolutions and exercise physiology

Robergs claims that the central governor model (CGM) of exercise performance has been re-stated so frequently that it can no longer be properly falsified according to the Popperian model of scientific disproof. In response I argue that the CGM is based on our and others' absolute disproof of the Hill model that has dominated the teaching of the exercise sciences for the past century. The basic ...
