Using Automatic Scoring Models to Detect Changes in Student Writing in an Intelligent Tutoring System
نویسندگان
چکیده
This study compares automated scoring increases and linguistic changes for student writers in two groups: a group that used an intelligent tutoring system embedded with an automated writing evaluation component (Writing Pal) and a group that used only the automated writing evaluation component. The primary goal is to examine automated scoring differences in both groups from pretest to posttest essays to investigate score gains and linguistic development. The study finds that both groups show significant increases in automated writing scores and significant development in lexical, syntactic, cohesion, and rhetorical features. However, the Writing-Pal group shows greater raw frequency gains (i.e., negative v. positive gains).

Using Data Mining Findings to Aid Searching for Better Cognitive Models
One key component of creating an intelligent tutoring system is forming a model that monitors student behavior. Researchers in machine learning area have been using automatic/semi-automatic techniques to search for cognitive models. One of the semi-automatic approaches is learning factor analysis, which involves human making hypothesis and identifying difficulty factors in the related items. In...
متن کاملBypassing the Intractable Problem of Student Modelling
This paper attempts to rehabilitate student models within intelligent tutoring systems. Recently, some researchers have questioned both the need for detailed student models and the practical possibility of building them. We regard it as axiomatic that any intelligent tutoring system needs a student model. This paper suggests some practical guidelines and changes in philosophical approach which ...

Intelligent tutoring systems constitute an evolution of computer-aided educational software. We present here the modules of an intelligent tutoring system for Automatic Control, developed in our department. Through the software application developed, students can perform complete automatic control laboratory experiments, either over the departmental local area network or over the Internet. Moni...
متن کاملEarly Prediction of Student Frustration
Affective reasoning has been the subject of increasing attention in recent years. Because negative affective states such as frustration and anxiety can impede progress toward learning goals, intelligent tutoring systems should be able to detect when a student is anxious or frustrated. Being able to detect negative affective states early, i.e., before they lead students to abandon learning tasks...
متن کاملUsing Multi-level Models to Assess Data From an Intelligent Tutoring System
Intelligent tutoring systems yield data with many properties that render it potentially ideal to examine using multi-level models (MLM). Repeated observations with dependencies may be optimally examined using MLM because it can account for deviations from normality. This paper examines the applicability of MLM to data from the intelligent tutoring system Writing-Pal using intraclass correlation...
