چکیده

THE CARCINOID TUMOR is a slow growing malignant lesion capable of distant metastases. Frequently, patients afflicted with this tumor develop a pathognomonic fibrosis of valves and endocardium involving primarily the right side of the heart. Although only 50% of the patients with metastatic disease survive for 3 years, these patients usually succumb from intractable congestive heart failure.' Recently, a patient was seen at the University of Rochester Medical Center with severe congestive heart failure due to carcinoid heart disease. This patient experienced dramatic improvement following corrective openheart surgery of both tricuspid and pulmonic valves. To the best of our knowledge, this represents the first patient with carcinoid heart disease successfully treated by surgery.

Coronary/cardiac Interventions

FEBRUARY 2004 I ENDOVASCULAR TODAY I 31 D uring the last 2 decades, percutaneous endovascular therapies have revolutionized the treatment of coronary artery disease. However, the development and dissemination of percutaneous approaches to heart valve disease have been less rapid. Balloon valvotomy for severe aortic stenosis in an infant.

Severe valvular aortic stenosis (AS) is one of the congenital heart diseases that may require intervention during infancy(l). Surgical valvotomy (performed under cardiopulmonary bypass) has, until recently, been the only method by which the aortic valve gradients could be reduced. Balloon aortic valvotomy (BAV) has now emerged as an attractive alternative(2,3). Despite the availability of the b...

Treatment of a malignant bronchial carcinoid affecting the mediastinum and left atrium by radical two stage resection with cardiopulmonary bypass and somatostatin infusion.

At operation a malignant bronchial carcinoid that had invaded the left atrium produced a carcinoid crisis in a 63 year old woman. A somatostatin infusion was required to resuscitate the heart and circulation and to allow subsequent resection of the carcinoid under cardiopulmonary bypass.

The use of cardiopulmonary bypass for the repair of atrioseptal defects and pulmonary stenosis.

With the advent of extracorporeal circulation and the subsequent extension of surgery to defects within the heart, many lesions have become the subject of study and controversy. Several intracardiac lesions are accepted as being best repaired by open cardiotomy. In inter-atrial septal defect and pulmonary stenosis, however, there is still some controversy as to whether the best technique is clo...

Fever, Splenomegaly, Lymphocytosis and Eosinophilia: A New Post-Cardiotomy Syndrome

Soon after the development of "closed" techniques for the surgical repair of acquired cardiac valvular lesions, a postoperative syndrome characterized mainly by the development of fever and pleuropericarditis was recognized in many of the patients undergoing these procedures.' The advent of "open" cardiac surgical procedures employing cardiopulmonary bypass has resulted in the recent recognitio...
